Chris are your folks from down that way?

Corolla is about the only free place to drive I know...but it is a haul by land...

Hatteras is fun to fish, but the summertime is a mad house...

We are all originally from around the Charlotte NC area. But my mom moved to Oak Island about 15 years ago and is now in her second term as Mayor of Oak Island.

I WISH. Their rules state that although you can purchase a permit to do so, you have to have a legitimate disability and even with a permit you can only use golf carts and the like to drive on the beach. No POV's (trucks or cars) are allowed at any time with or without a permit, except of course for the town personnel cleaning out the trash, etc....lol

Several years ago I just about got a ticket because even though I had handicap disabled veteran license plates AND a permit, I drove my truck on the beach and the cops were called and arrived within about ten minutes to "Handle Me"...lol

I go down to Kure Beach on multiple occations. In the Park area there is a place that you need to purchase a permit which is $10 for the day or $50 for the year. I have had one for every year I have been in NC. It is an easy drive from where I live. Just have to airdown the tires because the sand is soft. Here is the link to the area N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation: Fort Fisher State Recreation Area - Activities It is actually in the Fort Fisher state recreation area. It is a lovely place to go and pull up and enjoy the ocean or fish. One word of caution is to watch the tide. I have seen plenty of vehicles trapt or sunk. I am good to the weekend of the 28th.

oh yeah there are areas further north in the outerbanks (Hatters and Corolla) but from what I ahve heard it is quite the mad house sometimes. We are staying up in Corolla in a vaction house out in the 4x4 area in the fall. I am looking forward to the trip. Hopefully in Sept there will be less people.
