@Huck

Don't know if this was an old issue or not, but I never once had any distortion from my TYT during the WI/UP run.

Also, not too familiar with the channel scan that you guys are describing, but the TYT mic has the channel buttons on the top that you can change channels on the fly. However, I locked the mic buttons out, as I would grab the mic and flip a channel.

Didn't know that. Either way, I was very impressed with the setup/range.

You wont hear it because your transmitting with a TYT, on the other end it comes garbled.

We have researched the TYT does not have the scan function.

For icom i can program for example.

GLRE1
GLRE2
GLRE3
TRR1
TRR2

it will constantly scan those frequencies, when someone transmits on those, it will lock and hold for 10 seconds after the end of their transmission giving you the opportunity to transmit back right away. I can also default any one of those channels as my main communication channel. So if i key the mic it transmits on the default, say GLRE1. once i finish transmitting it will go back to the autoscan.

We have done this on SDBR and ARDD and other local runs. That way the support trucks can communicate uninterrupted or transmit things that don't need to be broadcast to the group.

Ah, understand now. Thanks!

As for coming through garbled, not sure anyone complained of it, but could it be a mic limitation and require an upgrade, or something different?

I can add to the radio thing.

The icom has the ability to scan multiple channels. this allows you to listen and respond within a set time frame to one channel, and then default back to the main channel you are communicating on. the TYT does not have this function.
If anyone wants this function on the F5021, send it to me and i can program it

Also as others have said, the Icom is quiet, its 50 watts instead of 60. BUT, the icom is clear.

The tyt is loud but it is very distorted when it comes across.

The issue with volume is you get a mix of the two on a run, and you have to turn up your radio for the icom guys, but then the tyt guys come across blaring and its a battle back and forth.

also keep in mind with handleds, they run at 5w, and can easily be talked over by the mobile base radios.

Ah, understand now. Thanks!

I am wondering the same. Could an upgraded mic cure what ails the TYT? I like the fact that it is a little more powerful than the ICOM as well as cheaper. And I may be a little finnicky, but I think the TYT looks nicer for a permanent mount in this spot -- http://www.fordraptorforum.com/f12/vhf-radio-install-pics-22108/index15.html#post504858

If you like the tyt, go for it. Hit up @Kmandoske

This is the first I've heard that the tyt comes across as garbled. I've lead many runs and haven't had anyone tell me that I wasn't coming across clear. If @Huck has told me, I don't remember.

Lodging is set guys!

I got us a better deal than originally posted. I talked our group booking agent down from $109 + tax to $92 plus tax for a standard double queen room. If you'd like a double queen suite (little bigger with sofa-sleeper), it will be $102 + tax. You may also be able to get a king jacuzzi suite for $112 (it's a small tub type jacuzzi, nothing fancy). All rooms have a microwave and frig. Breakfast is a mixture of hot and cold. Beverages are available around the clock. Hotel is nothing fancy but it's nice, clean and the staff seems nice. If you have any questions, let me know.

The detailed hotel info is in the first post.

Still trying to convince the wife but using that my parents will be up there is off the table now. They were going to be up there for 6 months for a church calling and was set to leave in 30 days. Dad had a first time major heart attack last night (11 blockages) and will be on rehab for at least 6 weeks. So those plans will be cancelled, naturally.

Wife said she wanted to go to the beach for vacation. Any beaches in Wyoming?

Whoa! I totally understand. Glad to hear he's in rehab. Hope they expect a full recovery.

Well not ocean beaches but we do have a few well known lakes/reservoirs, the most well known and popular would probably be Flaming Gorge Reservoir.

I'm sorry to hear that man. I hope your father is doing alright and is on his way to recovery.

I don't know about beaches but there are some dunes and trails calling your wife's name. But then again, happy wife happy life, right?

Wyo -- Thanks for the update about the hotel rooms! I will book as soon as I know who is going to be joining me on the run. Not sure I want to book the jacuzzi suite if one of the guys joins me as opposed to my wife... :supergay:

Hope all turns out good @RDFTS

@YukonJoe I'm starting to think I got your radio.
@Huck I liked the scan feture but didn't keep me from switching. I would agree if everyone got.the same radio it would be the best. But IMO the gut is the better radio. I've used both now one helping a framed that only has the icom you know who don't talk into the Mic. And sees half icom half tyt. This is not a green verses red they are 2 different radios. One works one works better.
