I have the Motorola 350/351 Talkabouts. Bought 2 for less then 75 bucks, came in a package deal. Some of these things go as far as 35miles which seems to be plenty of distance for what we need. These things also have 11 weather channels and a broad range of frequencies.
Just saying.

If you're going to get a programmable radio, then have it programmed to the MURS frequencies. MURS is the old "FRS". It's an open band of a few frequencies that live in the 150 Mhz range. Benefit here is you can legally transmit at up to 2 watts, and at the lower freq the wave is likely to propagate further than a UHF freq like FRS or GMRS.

Here's some unsolicited info in case you're interested.

I have a handheld, or HT, that transmits up to 5 watts. I have a remote mag mount antenna I'll bring if I bring it. I also have a mobile rig, a Yaseu, that I might put in. It will allow up to 50 watts on both VHF and UHF. Problem is, I can transmit very far, but no one that is far away can transmit at a high enough wattage that I'll be able to hear them. Radios is a game of lowest common denominator. The guy with the lowest wattage determines how far we can spread out.

Well we kinda all have to be on the same page as far as radios go. So we need to make a decision. If I'm by a radio I would like to be able to use it at the trr.

Also I know of one desert guy coming. He hasn't announced it yet though.

I also want to welcome 3 new sponsors to the event.

Baja designs
Synthetic motorsports
Whelen engineering

We have a lot of great prizes for the raffle guys!!!!!!

Mark, Jimmy and I have been busting out emails and contacts trying to get the best sponsors possible.

We will provide more info on how we will conduct the raffle to raise money for the wounded warrior project in December.
