If you're going to get a programmable radio, then have it programmed to the MURS frequencies. MURS is the old "FRS". It's an open band of a few frequencies that live in the 150 Mhz range. Benefit here is you can legally transmit at up to 2 watts, and at the lower freq the wave is likely to propagate further than a UHF freq like FRS or GMRS.

I have a handheld, or HT, that transmits up to 5 watts. I have a remote mag mount antenna I'll bring if I bring it. I also have a mobile rig, a Yaseu, that I might put in. It will allow up to 50 watts on both VHF and UHF. Problem is, I can transmit very far, but no one that is far away can transmit at a high enough wattage that I'll be able to hear them. Radios is a game of lowest common denominator. The guy with the lowest wattage determines how far we can spread out.
