Winter tire advice

I felt that the stock BFGs were subpar in our winters. I have heard good things about the Wildpeaks and negative things about the wear on the duratracs. But the duratracs do well in the snow.

Digging a bit more it seems like the people who complain about the tread wear are using them year round. Would make sense if they're a softer tire meant for cold weather that they'd wear quicker in year round use.

I run mt's in crazy north ontario winters and ice roads. My mud grapplers should be renamed to snow grapplers when aired down.
As for icy highways..... Dont text and drive and take er easy and you wont have any problems

correct. my truck came with bfg at's as well. stock. and compared to falkens they sucked in snow and ice roads. love my falkens in winter. but i do need weight in the bed. as should all pickups that only weigh 4000 lbs lmao.

duratracs really dont wear that bad. depends how much you drive, and like you said. year round they will wear more due to softer tread compund. which helps in winter. theyre a great choice. brother has em on his 2wd chevy and they do fine.

as for the falkens
no, they do not have a snoflake. at least mine dont.

My opinion, which sucks as much as the next guy's is that the stock BFGs are horrid in the snow.

id bet they would be killer with some added siping. buddy has them on his dodge and loves em in the snow. no getting stuck haha. sketchy on ice roads, but all MT's are. hell, every tire is if its got a shit driver.


OP, from the first post choices, go with duratrac. you say it will be a dedicated winter tire. grab a set of duratracs, stud em, and you will enjoy yourself.

If where you live is legal to stud id go ahead and do that. I studded my trail grapplers last year runnin some ice up by hudson bay in ontario. Sucks that anything south of north bay its illegal to use any type of studs

Studs are legal in my area but I have to remove the tires by a certain date.

I'd just like to note that I don't have my stock wheels anymore. I have 17" Trophys for winters so you guys posting Blizzacks etc if you know what size tire would work for me please let me know.

I'm not new to trucks. I've owned an F150 since I was 20 and I'm 34 now. I'm new to 35" tires though. I'm also new to a "performance" truck. My old trucks I just maintained and did a few little useful modifications. I always played with cars in the past so my trucks were just a necessary evil. In the past I've just run whatever I could get in an oem size for cheap for winter. Now cheap and oem size don't exist haha.

I appreciate the banter. I'm gonna order tires in a couple weeks. Not in a huge rush. I'd like to have them on by end of September early October.

Where do you live? Are studs legal for your area?

Like I said before we run the Blizzaks on our personal trucks for the winter (run winter tires about 6 months of the year up here), but all of our office work cars have studded tires on them. The studs are best on glare ice, but good siped tires are pretty incredible everywhere else. I had a set of studless Nokian Hakkapelettas on an STI before, and it was a complete animal in almost every road condition!! Michelin makes a really good Ice-X studless tire too. I think the key is, if you go for a studdless tire, don't skimp and buy a really nice one with really good siping. A studded tire has to have a bit less siping in some areas for the studs, so they have a tendency to be a bit harder overall too. I've driven them both a lot, and I always purchase good studdless tires when I go winter tire shopping. Tire Size Calculator - Compare Tire Sizes

I found this tire size calculator super helpful when changing rim diameter on my STI and buying winter tires. This way you can play around with various tire/rim sizes and see what's close to your OEM tire diameter and not have a lot of change to performance. I know a lot of people will run different size tires for different applications, but this tool will help if you're trying to keep them close.
