Do you live in a state with no deductible for windshield cracks? Florida there is zero cost
I don't know if CA is one of these states but I can call my insurance company tomorrow and find out.

Does anyone know if a glass repair shop can try to put a coating over the top of it to give it some strength?

@SurfRaptor ca has $100 deductible for windshield replacement under your comprehensive coverage. the crack is too big to try to repair. i had several windshields replaced when i lived there. last one was august 2020. here in colorado now though, you have to add it to your policy. kinda sucks.

I spent my whole career in glass and auto glass. Sold my shop in 2018.
Definitely a rock chip. I always told my customers when you think it’s time call me!
Ask around and find the best technician in town. Stay away from those soulless corporate glass shops. They can be a real crap shoot.

Pay your deductible, insist on OEM glass and get the safety system recalibrated.

OEM glass is important. Would you replace your seat belts with aftermarket Chinese specials?

I just replaced the windshield in my Wrangler last month at 5000 miles. First windshield in 20 years at least for me. Pretty lucky in Wyoming!

Thanks for the great advice. I will do all of that. Just because you were in the industry, how can you recognize it's a rock chip? There are no dents or imperfections in the glass on the outside?

I planned on doing a bunch of driving this summer in 2 months. Should I wait until after the summer is over just because of the road trips? It will be in Baja running hard. I'd have to get it re-tinted also.

To check for a stress crack. Take a ball point pen and run it down the crack. When the pen hits something. That’s the chip. Those dam chips are easy to miss. Until there gone. Stress cracks are very, very rare. Rock chip repairs save a lot of windshields too.
I would never replace a windshield before a trip like you planned.
Your crack is very unlikely to spread. If it did and law enforcement noticed. They are really pissed about something else.
Find a cool little sticker to cover it with!
Have a great trip.

Those that have had these cracks in the corner of the windshield, do the trucks involved have sun/moon roofs?
Just curious.

Yea, I'm wondering the same thing. Is this a warranty issue? My truck is not garaged, and I had Llumar Air 80 ceramic tint on it. I do have a moon roof.

Can this be fixed using the same method of rock chip repair? Should I bother investing the money?
