Dry grass... No joke. I’ve been dealing with a bunch of dead trees over the last year, some I whacked, some I hired tree cutters to whack. One of them broke and fell over in my back yard, I had the cutter stack it into a pile by an existing tree stump about 3 months back. I had 2 burn piles, one of which I seeded with some dry grass from the back, back, BACK part of the property. It went up like flash paper, and burned hot for about 10-15 seconds, and plenty hot enough to start the inside of the burn pile.

2nd pile was about ... 8 feet high, mostly tree limbs, but some 15” wide sections of tree trunk. I burned it about 7 or 8 hours, got do about half a dozen smoldering, hot logs, and doused it with the hose for 20 minutes. it was still smoldering the next day, then the daily winds from the east rolled in and behold - the remaining logs caught fire again. I checked it out and decided to centralize everything and let it burn. Rains rolled in, the fire was still burning, totally unaffected by the rain. It rained again overnight, and the fire was still going in the morning, very small, but I centralized everything again and it fired right on up. This morning, it’s nothing but ash.

That 2nd burn pile was just one tree, I can’t imagine how hard it is to put out a legit forest fire.

Now if we could get everybody to do what you do, we would have less problems with fires in residential areas, especially if people were allowed to water their lawns, but we have water restrictions here as well, lol. Sometimes you can't win. I water my lawn, but I doubt it would do any good if the neighborhood went up, I live on the edge of a forest as well. There's a wild apple tree down the road from here that we picked apples off of last year, there's no apples this year.
On a side note, it would be nice to have some of that rain that's in China and Europe!

here’s the cedar creek fire in the northern cascades from about 2000 ft AGL

Walked outside this morning to let the dogs out of the kennel and it started raining. Went back in, got a rain hat and as I walked back towards the kennel, BOOOM, huge lightning bolt right up from my me.

Walked the dogs, short walk! Fed them.... Smelled wet grass fire. Went in and dialed 911 and reported it. Called the neighbors.

My other neighbor saw smoke just as one of my other neighbors kid rode up on a quad. He pointed to it and the kid rode straight up the mountain to it, about a half mile. The kid single handed put it out! The co fire crew arrived and drove a 4wd fire truck up there too. D6 Cat arrived for good measure.

Dodged the silver bullet!!

Thanx everyone. it all seemed better today very little wind fire mostly gone up the mountain. Choppers working on hot spots near the base of the mountain. They packed it in about 6pm. Winds really picked up southbound about 7pm and the hotspots have flared and are now blazing thier way down towards east side of town.

We're finally getting some serious rain here in SW Utah. I actually had a flash flood almost wash out our driveway. It's been scary dry for about 18 months till now. The Raptor did enjoy the romp up the river that was our driveway!

There is a lot of good argument there for controlled burns to get rid of the excess fuel

Fire took a turn and went back up hill. We should be good now. Doesn't look good for houses on the hill as the fire has gone over the top into the rural area. There is a hospital 15 miles north of me that is on evac alert, the fire is raging on the north flank. Houses are being lost up there, A coworker may have lost his.
