What happens when live valve fails?

So the only Raptor I've owned was a 2012, what happens in the live valve versions when the "live" part fails? Does it still perform like a regular shock? Or is it a "holy crap, something is broken" feeling?

It goes full stiff mode. The part internal to the shock is sprung towards the stiff side, so without power you get the shock as stiff as it can be. Still functions though.
