Replaced steering rack.
Had some weeping around the boots on both end and some play in the wheel on center, figured it was time to replace it and I had a new rack in the box for the last 8 months!! Apparently they are next to impossable to find these days.
After the swap and flushing/bleeding the rack and lines my sloppy on center is still there FML!!
Doesnt look like there is any play in the steering shaft, tie rods are brand new Moog HD so not sure what the deal is.

Looks like I need a lash adjustment!

Thoughts on rebuilding your old rack yourself to keep as a spare?

I have been thinking about rebuilding mine, but having a hard time finding information on what all needs done and what seals, bearings, bushings, etc I need.

It has to be that steering rod, it's 2 pieces, the one that bolts onto the rack from the steering wheel, it is a well known issue on this generation of f150's with mileage or excessive abuse.

Same here, there was a thread a while back from the guys that did the DIY shock rebuild thread, they got a donor rack or two but it didn't pan out. Not sure if you need some special tools like a transmission or if it's just not easy/feasible to tear down...maybe the wear parts weren't readily available like in a kit from Ford, but if there's rebuilt units out there somebody has figured it out.

You may have already done these steps but just in case. Get a buddy to sit in the truck and gently rock the steering back and forth not exceeding the lash. This is done with engine off. follow the steering shaft as it exits the cab and check each part along the shaft for play. Example: check the steering U joint, the slide coupling, the pinch bolt yoke, then note if the shaft on each side of the steering unit is moving, follow each attachment point from the steering unit all the way to the wheel hub.
This should help pinpoint where the play is coming from. Older rigs most often it is the sum of all those places as everything wears.

I just got the gas tank skid plate delivered Monday about an hour before I took off for a three day, two night camping trip. I was hoping to install it before.

It rained pretty good for about two hours the first day. The road into my property gets good and muddy everytime it rains. I had a good time tearing through the mud road!
It was ALOT muddier before the next storm washed alot of the mud off.
