Alright boys, I was out exploring the north of Georgia and while out I ran low on fuel and rolled into the closest gas station and I must have caught them between fill ups because they only had E15. I threw a few gallons in and went on my way. Didn't feel like any loss of power or anything negative, but when I sat down to eat later on I starting surfing the web and looked up effects of ethanol on our trucks and it seems like a lot of people "avoid it like the plague" to "Id rather not use it, but sometimes is okay" to one or two slap happy "ITS THE BEST STUFF OUT THERE"....

Anyways I ended up filling up with premium as soon as I got back into town to try and dilute whatever I had in there, close to 28 gallons of premium.... The truck states that E15 is okay on the fill port, but I still feel worried.... am I overreacting?

well I'm the slap happy guy I use e-30 94 clean burning octane. I haven't looked it up but i'd guess e-15 is 91 octane. e-20 92-93 octane. anything over e-10 you don't get the water faze thing because there is enough to keep it mixed.

I found this

Table 1: Fuel blends tested by ORNL
Ethanol Blend
E0 E10 E15 E30
Octane rating (anti-knock index) 87.4 88.2 92.6 94.4
Research octane (RON) 90.7 92.4 97.8 100.7
FlexFuel Vehicle compatible Y Y Y Y
Make and model 2001 and newer compatible Y Y Y N
Researchers from ORNL tested two fuel blends

You were among them, yes....

Do you have any tune or modifications to run those fuels? I'm way more lax about the E15 now, especially since the truck says it can take it and most of the stuff I read was, at worst, ambiguous about the upsides. I was just put in a position where there was no real choice and a lack of information (backwoods of northern Georgia doesn't really have great cell service).

For the record I think it was 88 or 89 octane.

Don't be fooled by ethenol. It is grossly inferior to gasoline. A fuel's octane rating has very little or nothing to do directly with the amount of power it produces. Octane is nothing more than a number used to determine a fuels ability to resist knock. 1 gallon of 100% ethanol fuel contains around 76,000 BTUs. 1 gallon of gasoline contains about 110,000 BTUs. This means there is vastly more energy potential in gasoline than ethanol.

I should add, since that's not really what this post was about, it's certainly okay to run it as long as your manual says it's OK. I would not go by anything (this forum, and the "the web" included) other that what is in the manual. Period.

Like I said I just had a lack of information and it was either fill up now with something I'm unsure about or risk running out of fuel in an area I'm unfamiliar with.

got smashed between a clapped out rice burner and a 2' tall curb a couple hours ago. no visible damage other than a really awesome amount of curb rash on my tires, but the front end is clunking over bumps and when turning full lock. i swear i have the worst luck.
