They are good when you have a wide coverage repeater system like my local pd and county sheriff has. We dont have the luxury of having a repeater system where anybody can use. There is one near rausch creek but unless you have your licens you cant use it.

I wondered if that had a lot to do with it. I still figured they would need a little more than what those seem to offer. I wish they worked better. The size is nice

for local stuff and convovy the small antenna wrks great. I work with a County EMA and bounce to their reparter when I'm using the radio for county Business. When I go in the wood to put up the 1/4 wave and that works great. when I head out west I will use a longer whip because there is less tree cover. It does not hurt to have some options.

Police / fire in most areas are usually on the newer 800 MHz equipment using a troubled system with *several* repeaters around their area. The radios in the cars key up, then the radio automaticly picks the closest repeater to them and channel, then gives a "ok to talk" beep. Super super cool the way it works.

Because they are always close to a repeater they don't need large antennas.

If you look at state police they usually have very long antennas on lowband, this is for the HUDGE range they need.
