Any down side to ripping out the front fender liners?

Exposed wiring on the front right side that you can tear/burn into with your tires when compressed. Plus you'll have a MUCH dirtier engine bay after some mud.

Best bet if you wanna get rid of them is to replace them with something like custom-fabbed tins. Some of our vendors can hook you up with those, they'll hold up MUCH better but they aren't cheap.
