Has anyone tried modifying the USB port for 1AMP or 2AMP charging? Shouldnt be that hard, simply open the factory USB wire from the NAV, seperate out the + and -, then send the + and - from a high output USB charger to the USB port.

Ive done a bunch of electronics work, and know USB just has 4 conducters. 2 are data and the other 2 are +5v and ground. Ive actually used this to power a 5v board from my PC.....

I dont see any problems with this, but before I do it I just figured I would check if anyone else has...

Me too in my truck, but why not just hard wire one in and run the red and black into the stock plug?

this wont work as there is a power draw negotion that takes place on usb data connections. This is so that a device does not draw more power than the port can provide. If you want high power charging from that port you will have to remove the data lines from it also. Even still this may not work for devices that negotiate power draw with the charger via the qi protocol such as new Samsung devices.

1A 12VDC to USB adapters are cheap and you'll have 2 USB ports

I tried out a usb splitter under the dash and fried a few go pro batteries, my tablet didn't even accept it as a charge device.

I just keep the wires out now and use the 2 usb cig adapter as shown above. If there is a quality converter to use with the under dash usb, i'm all for it. I liked the clean factor and keeping the cig adapters avail for other things.

I just ran a line from a spare upfitter line in the glove box up to the rear view mirror and mounted a 3 way 12V outlet splitter up there with a phone charger and gps charger so the cables where not hanging down. I rarely use the sync USB port.

Am I missing something? Didnt your truck come with a 110, 220, 2 dedicated USB ports, and 2 dedicated car charger ports? Mine did.
