Personally I would use a mini-USB to a female USB cable. As you stated this will allow you to use other USB devices on the system (i.e. harddrives, thumb drives, other phones, etc.).

The length probably will not be over 10 feet. My suggestion though is to have your female-type USB connection inside the center console. The only problem is that I did not measure the cables or the distance from the unit jack to the center console hole. For that measurement take a piece of string and run it from the center speaker down to the glovebox then down the side of the center console and then up to the top of the storage box (center console compartment). Of course then you measure the string.

Hi Scott, I KNOW it - I was poking fun at myself for the questions I've asked. You've been patient with me (on 2 forums!) and I appreciate it.

If I put the new cable in USB1 location and move the Ford factory cable to USB2 location, will the USB in the dash be "live" so it can be used to charge devices plugged into it?

So, as far as I can tell, the factory plug in USB 1 (the one that goes to the faceplate USB female plug) does NOT fit into USB2. I'm not sure why they did that since they're color coded (USB1 is black and USB2 is gray).

By the way, I'm using a 6' USB cable.
