TSB 20-2162 (Excessive Oil Consumption)

Hey guys, I have a 2020 Raptor with build date Oct 2019 and 68k miles. Last month completed a bunch of maintenance on the truck, as I was going on a couple off-road trips. Doing the engine oil change, found the dipstick barely registered any oil, and when drained, only came to 3 qts. Maintenance Minder showed 31% (3k mi) oil life remaining.

Did the oil change, enjoyed my trips, now have the truck at the dealership to complete TSB 20-2162. Reading that TSB, it clearly states trucks with build dates after 02APR2019 do NOT need new valve covers and just need PCM reprogram, however, my dealership said they don't trust the TSB and from experience believe new valve covers is all that's required. When I was replacing spark plugs a few weeks ago, I didn't notice the VCs leaking so I'm a bit skeptical that the PCM reprogram is completely unnecessary, but wanted to get everyone's thoughts?

don't know yet, haven't put that many miles on it. Bought truck in Feb from dealer with 64k mi and they did an oil change, but I didn't verify oil level, so assuming it was full 6 qts then it burned 3 qts in 4k miles.

Going forward, will definitely check oil level regularly.

If you’ve been running it hard it can consume excessive oil on DFSO events, which occurs when downshifting. The PCM update corrects that issue by limiting manifold vacuum on throttle tip out.

Hopefully you didn’t run it hard with only 3 quarts of oil in it; oil level is something that should be checked monthly, especially when it’s a used vehicle with unknown history.

You already have the updated valve covers; no sense paying them for that unless the excessive consumption continues after the PCM update, at which point I’d be suspect of base engine damage from low oil level.

Never received any instrument warning about low oil pressure, and I hadn’t driven it hard before changing the oil and finding only 3 qts. I have a Ford ESP Premium warranty so I’m hopefully covered for any engine issues.

Definitely checking oil level regularly now and will watch consumption. All my dealership will do now is install new valve covers, even though I should already have the updated versions, but they aren’t gonna do a PCM reprogram.

Like I said, tech believes that doesn’t actually do shit. Also believes the valve covers need to be replaced, even though my truck should already have the revised covers. I showed him the TSB I printed and he gave me a snarky comment about having hands on experience.

Additionally they’ve had my truck for a week now attempting to replace the valve covers. They gave me a new truck as a loaner but still frustrating.

When I get my truck back, I’ll watch consumption and if it uses any oil will make them complete the software update.

Wow that’s ridiculous, a guy with a big ego who thinks he knows more than the engineers :rolleyes:

Agreed. However this isn’t costing me anything so I’m gonna let it play out then if I still have consumption issues I’ll push the dealership or get Ford involved.
