So I have done this a few times, it was when I have my 1 ton diesels. As many have stated, set up your camera and be ready it could be great video for all of us. In fact I had a large elm tree at my previous house that I had cut down years prior, be aware elm trees love it when they are cut, the roots then sprout all sorts of additional small trees unless you poison the stump. Anyway after poisoning the stump and allowing it to rot I decided to pull it out. As many suggested, I used a kinetic rope, this was before the new stuff offered today. Anyway, I hooked it to the front of my 1 ton and backed up slowly and the rope started to slip off the stump before stopping, I pulled forward to try the removal again and the same. After about 4 tries I decided to back up quickly and then hit the brakes, the rope contracted and then all of a sudden the stump which measured about 2.5' in diameter at the top but at the bottom it was over 4'. This stump literally popped out of the ground and then proceeded to fly into the air before the contracting rope pulled it to the truck. Well at this point, panic had taken over and I set there with my foot firmly placed on the brake while watching this now tumbling stump roll at a high rate of speed directly towards the truck, the good news is it rolled from about 30' away all the way towards the truck, all the way to about the middle of the truck bed for about a total of 45'. Well after coming back to my senses, I slowly backed up thinking that I just tumbled a stump down the entire passenger side of my truck but never heard any impacts. I got out and find that it missed the truck by less than 6".
Be careful and be ready to run. But I still suggest that you take the time to kill the stump or you might have many sprouting little trees possibly impacting your new slab.
