Could you have negotiated the trade up front when you ordered the 2020?

Bringing an old thread back to life instead of starting a new one. Curious what peoples trades or dealership sales have been recently. I was just offered 43K for a 2018 802A loaded with 42K miles. The dealer has a used 2017 with 63K miles on it, 802A package with a few options but is scratched up from the front to the back. Looks like somebody had a spastic dog that clawed the ever loving shit out of it and they have it on the lot for $56K+. They also have one 2020 base model crew cab for 68K (5K over MSRP). They say vehicles are moving and they have been busy, but once they gave me the lowball price they said they aren't sure how the economy is going to effect sales. They do have local ads running right now saying they want to increase their late model used inventory.

That is a low offer. I am not exactly sure on the options that you have, but if your truck is fully loaded and your truck is in great condition, then the trade in value should be more like $50k. The dealership does make a good point though, there is uncertainty in the market, so it is going to be tough to get top dollar on your trade in because dealerships are probably going to be hurting for awhile with sales. Your truck should sell privately at $55k easily given that you said dealers still have crazy pricing in Alaska. Then again, with COVID-19, you may have to wait longer than usual.

These were the values I found on KBB:

Agreed. Those were about the same numbers I got when using KBB. 49-53K trade and 53-56K private party. I would have been more interested at 50K to just move on to the 2020. Based on the 5K markup they have on their 2020 and their lack of inventory on the lot, it doesn't seem like they are in panic mode just yet. Hard to not feel insulted with an offer like that, especially when I paid them 1K over MSRP back in 2018 for this truck. I think I'll toss it out there for 55K for a minute and see if I get any interest privately.

Yea, one dealership in March quoted me $10k more than what I ended up paying on the difference between my trade-in and my my new 2020 Race Red. Some dealerships aren’t willing to do deals unless they are able to make killer margins, while others are content just to make a profit and move on. Based on the numbers they gave you, they are not serious about doing a deal.

In Alaska, do you get a tax credit if you trade in your vehicle for a new vehicle?

I just can't believe there are dealers still asking and getting sticker or over sticker price for raptors. They aren't rare, limited production, etc. These trucks are readily available and well discounted (6-8k or more) at many dealers all over the US. I just don't get why some dealers think their raptors are special? Or their consumer is that oblivious or willing to be taken advantage of.

I also live in an area where dealerships are limited and can be stubborn. So I've taken many long weekend road trips to trade and buy vehicles. Spending a day or two driving one way may sound unfavorable to some. But its those experiences I remember most from my car buying escapades. Plus u get to enjoy the road trip back in your new ride! And if its a difference of 6-8k in my pocket I'll do it again in a heart beat.

There is no reason you shouldn't be able to get a reasonable trade value while still getting reasonable discount off of sticker.

No taxes on vehicles registered in Alaska, so at least we have that going for us. I will be paying $2,400 to have the vehicle shipped up on the barge to Alaska from the ports in Washington though. It's amazing how quickly you can have a $10K swing by just doing a little homework and shopping around. Congrats on your deal!

Use the 2017 on their lot against them. It's a year older with 21k more miles and they're asking $56k? And it's all scratched up? Based on the 2017's price tag, I'm guessing they'll through a price of $60k on your truck if you decided to trade it to them. (Without knowing your options and conditions.)

I wouldn't take less than $50K for it. My dealer normally has 2-3 new in stock. They now have 10 (2- 19"s) and 8-20's. They are just collecting dust.
