Trade gen 2 for gen 1??

I’ve got a 19 and I love it, minus the sound and life span of the engine. Playing with the idea of looking for a clean 14 with under 75k miles. From why I hear the 6.2 is build to go hundreds of thousands of miles. I haven’t ever driven a gen 1. If I got it my plan would be to put fresh fluids in everything and keep it long term.

What do you guys think? How does the driving experience differ from a 19? Is the reliability of the gen 1 overstated?

I had a 2013 that I put 100000 miles on without once having to go to the dealer for an issue. It's a fantastic truck, and I loved it, but I wanted to offload it while resale was still decent and I got into a Gen 2. The Gen2 is faster, better MPG, and all around has been more fun. I wouldn't discount the longevity of the engine just yet, but if you want the V8 then you should go to the Gen 1 and save a few bucks. The gen1 was more truckish to me, the gen2 is more refined.

The Gen 1 engine reliability is not overstated. The 6.2L is not infallible, but they are 100% proven given their usage in the Superduty trucks. I've heard of exactly zero common problems with them, which is remarkable really.

I don't think you'll like a Gen 1 after driving the Gen 2. The Gen 2 is like driving a new car around with the lighter weight up front and the electric steering. You will also be moving to a truck whose rubber parts are all 3 to 4 years older, which is not a positive in any way. If you are willing to give up some cush for outright reliability though- go for it.

I’ve been playing around with the idea but y’all bring up some good points. The gen 1s have aged and odds are one I could even find wouldn’t be cared for like my vehicles (not abused, garage kept, hand washed, etc). I do love the aluminum body. My 19 drives like a sports car compared to older trucks. If Ford would have stuck with the 6.2 my attitude would be to keep it for the rest of my life. I’ve only had V8s and I love the sound but I suppose it’s time to just come to terms that it’s a V6. We can wish that Ford will bring back a V8 option but I don’t see it happening. They are hell bent on the EcoBoost and now hybrid and electric is in the pipeline. I’ll keep my raptor for the next few years and see what they come up with for the next gen. If this gen 2 3.5 proves to not be a 250k mile motor I may go back to a regular V8 F-150 or an F250 tremor with the 7.3. Thanks for the input guys.

had a 17 Gen 2.. sold it back to the dealer and bought my Gen 1 off of them. I don't miss the Gen 2 and even have a few buddies with 19s and 20s who love theirs, but admit they do miss their Gen 1s. sure the Gen 2 is more powerful, more tech but at the end of the day I don't care about those differences.. I wont part with mine, i'll just rebuild the engine as it's cheap to do vs a 3.5.

my 12 SD at work with it's 6.2 has 200k miles on it.. zero problems with it. i expect the 7.3 to be as reliable.

If that's what you want to do than go for it. My Gen2 hasn't had any issues yet at 42K miles so I wouldn't do it.
Life is to short to worry about what might happen so do whatever makes you happy.

In my opinion it boils down to how long you want to keep the truck. If you are the type of person that wants a different truck every 4-5 years keep the Gen 2. If you want to keep it indefinitely then trade for the Gen 1. I have a Gen 1. Going to keep it forever. 6.2L is rock solid.

sorry guys, I never post here but i can say that I have roasted Gen 2 stock trucks in drag races

no disrespect gentlemen, but i will never see myself in a gen 2. It’s a beautiful truck but it’s just not raw enough for me.

No reason to bash and offer all your opinions.

I was looking used both ways. A low mileage SCAB from 2014 was high 40k and the same for a low mileage SCAB 2017 was nearly the same if they were both the top level options like I was looking for. There was no comparing unless you just want a V8. The second gen is a better truck from all objective points.
