Throttle stuttering on acceleration

For the symptoms, would you describe it like you’re driving over rumble strips under load? I’m a service advisor for a Porsche center and we’ve experienced issues with the transfer cases binding up. Porsche does not allow us to open up the cases to identify the root cause but the symptons were no longer present after being replaced.

For those that are advising to replace the spark plugs. That’s all fine and dandy for someone that does not mind getting their hands dirty. Keep in mind though, each time a vehicle is brought in to the dealer for a concern, it gives Ford another opportunity to identify the root cause and possibly release a TSB so other owners aren’t having to create a new post as to what’s going on with their trucks.

I have not. I didn't want to change anything before I had it looked at for warranty. I can't believe it would be plugs since there were no misfires recorded.

After us data logging and discovering that the PCM is commanding the throttle body to make abrupt adjustments and with the fact that the PCM and TCM update also made a noticeable improvement with the issue, I really doubt it's plugs.

After we're done with it here at the dealership either fixing it or not being able to fix it. I'll pull the plugs and see which ones are in the truck, what the gap is and how they look. Then I'll also put new ones in since I'll probably be around 22,000 miles.



Mine was running rough and a couple months prior to running rough it threw a misfire code. Idling like crap, basically embarrassed to give friend a ride. Changed to sp542 plug gapped at .025 and this thing is as smooth as butter. I would have never believed it...30 minute job max and it was night and day better!

So many of us have said just swap the plugs to 542s and gap at .025 and it will fix the problem. Why you refuse to just do it and come up with excuses to not do it is a bit strange.

So many of us have said just swap the plugs to 542s and gap at .025 and it will fix the problem. Why you refuse to just do it and come up with excuses to not do it is a bit strange.

I'm not making excuses NOT to do it. What I am doing is trying to determine that's what it is before I just replace the plugs.

I don't think I've seen a post here where anyone has data logged their truck trying to determine what their particular problem is. Not all of the miss, hesitation, stutter, vibration problems are from spark plugs heat range and or spark plug gap.

I am a long term employee at a Ford dealership so I am fortunate enough that I can work directly with service to figure out what the problem is.

I had considered just throwing the new plugs in it but decided it was a better idea to try and determine what the problem was first.

I was positive we were going to find engine misfires that were causing the problem and spark plugs were going to be the fix. But so far it doesn't appear to be that. The PCM is commanding the throttle body to make the throttle changes that aren't being called for by the throttle pedal sensors. This doesn't point to spark plugs.

But dude has connections and is an employee at the dealership.

They are finding things not related to spark plugs using tools we don’t have.

Let the man investigate!

As proven to fix the issue here on this forum, and other ecoboost forums.

It takes 20 minutes to do. What is the problem with changing plugs? I do not follow your logic here. Worst case, you end up with new fresh plugs. If it continues to have the same problem, bust our your automotive Inspector Gadget kit and tell us something we don't already know here.

Confused...quarried FRF on Jan 28...Multiple suggestions made...Works at Ford dealership...Techs plug into the OBD and read a computer screen...No other action taken...Problem not resolved Feb 13...Are there any real Mechanics left...Why is this not resolved...Inexcusable unless you only work one day a week.

So here's the deal.... you guys don't like my approach of trying to confirm what my trucks issue is before I throw parts at it. Then do us both a favor and just use the convenient "ignore" feature of this forum.

Yes I work for a dealership, 6 days a week in fact. My income is made from selling cars. So selling cars is my first priority. Plus customers cars come first in service. So when our lead tech and I both have some free time we will work on the issue.


If we get to the point where Ford can't give me a fix I'll do the plugs and see what happens. If it is plugs then why doesn't every Raptor have this issue? I've sold 9 Raptors over the last 2 years and NONE of them have this issue. I'd venture to guess that most or all of them have the same plugs I have and the same plug gap.

As far as I can tell, you are a Ford Customer, that happens to work at a Ford Dealership. Turn your truck in for warranty work like the rest of us Customers do. Driving around in a truck that has an obvious problem for as long as you obviously have makes no sense. And, if all the Techs at your dealership can do is plug into the OBD, then take zero corrective action, you need to take your ride to a better service center. That was my point.

My confusion stems not from the fact that you are doing diligent research, it comes from the fact that you're still cruising around in it. If mine acts up, its scheduled for turn in the same/next day.
