So vhf/uhf is pretty much line of site of your in mountains and elevation changes are getting in between you and the rest of the group more power isn't going to help you much. If it's tree coverage that's the problem then power will help you. It should be noted that if your using the MURS channels the power limit (legally) is 2w. Mirage makes some options but if your going this route I advise you to get your ham license and find a local club to give you pointers on setup and tuning. Another problem may be finding nmo antennas rated for that much power.

Also running that much power can cause possible rf burn. If something were to happen to the antenna system its more likely you will cook something as well.

I think they recommend a larger radio with truck mounted antenna for snoball, but I know people who have used handhelds with less power than the one I posted without issue. It will definitely be good enough for Silver Lake.

Looking for a little help here trying to program MURS freqs. I have a Yeasu FT-60 that I'm going to use in the truck for now. Going to run it through my Diamond antenna that was on my Kenwood TM-V71. I have the programming software for both. Right now I have FM Narrow-simplex-no tone-5khz step-5khz tx step-ctcss 67hz

Looks good to me.

Doesn't matter what you set the CTCSS freq at since you will have it set for no tone anyway. Unless you and other users set a tone. Tone/CTCSS/DCS all set up privacy tones.

You do have the MARS/CAP mod done, right? The FT-60 won't TX around 151-155 kHz without it. If not Google "FT-60 MARS/CAP mod" to find out how. Not quite legal, do it at your own risk.

It is not the best place to install an antenna. You are better off punching a hole in the center of the roof. And, for the price of that, you could upgrade to a much better radio. If properly installed, a roof hole mounted NMO will not leak. I have done many, none leak. The design of the Bulletproof Diesel DOUBLES chances of water ingress by having twice the amount of foam seals.

Always the best to drill the roof and put a NMO mount. However, if you have a gen 2 with the whole roof moonroof that's not an option.

FYI, I've done this to most of my vehicles and at trade in time no dealer has deducted anything for it. I asked about it when I traded my 14' just to be sure and he said "they would care if it's 6 months old with 4,000 miles, but when you trade in a vehicle with 50k on it, things like that don't make a difference at all".
