No idea...but I was wondering too, as mine has the same thing. I just popped one of those black plastic panel rivets in it to calm my OCD...

I have no idea either, but if it's right behind the handle, then maybe it's a way to open it with a poker of some sort or to install a release handle for the inside if you have a camper shell on it? Just guessing.

It’s for the bed divider/extender. It has a peg that you can use to secure the middle when it’s flipped out on the tailgate.

Is that a Gen 2 thing? The Gen 1's had bed extenders and I don't have a hole in my tailgate. I don't have the step either, so maybe they put different panels on.

Yes, the Gen 2s have that for the plastic bed extender.

My 2011 has this for the bed extenders also so it’s not just a G2 thang baby.
