Sync 3 update

I tried on a Mac and a PC. There’s 5 of those tar.gz files in the syncmyride folder. That one is the only one causing me issues. If I skip it the others extract just fine.

You don’t extract or expand the files in the sync my ride folder. The install does that. Leave them as tar.gz. And the format for the usb is FAT32

I wasn’t unpacking the individual files. I was unpacking the main zip file, but it was hanging up on that particular file.

A guy on the other thread said it worked when he downloaded it with chrome. I never tried chrome.

Same outcome with Chrome. Fails with "file encrypted with unknown compression" using Stuffit and "Error 2 - No such file or directory" using OSX. There must be a problem with the zip.

Why isn't this an OTA update? Sync has the ability to connect to my home wifi and it has automatic updates but it seems this is only over USB.

What's included in this update?

This software release is the latest update in our continued efforts to improve system performance, device connectivity, and the overall SYNC experience.
This software contains all previous enhancements, so there is no need to install any other updates. The installation of this update will take up to 60 minutes to complete.

DO NOT remove your USB drive or turn off your vehicle. You must wait until Installation Complete is displayed on the center screen before removing your drive or turning your vehicle off.

While the update is loading, SYNC will not recognize your mobile phone or media device. Be sure your vehicle engine is running (not in accessory mode) throughout the entire installation process.

Although your vehicle must be in park when you initiate the installation process, once the download process has begun, you may drive your vehicle.

NOTE: Some vehicles are equipped with an “Automatic Engine Shutdown” option and due to the length of time for the update process this feature should be Disabled. You can find this feature on the left hand cluster display (use left hand switch Control > Settings > Vehicle and uncheck the box next to “Auto Engine Shutdown”). For more details, refer to your owners manual “Starting and Stopping the Engine” section for information on how to disable this feature.

How to download software updates to a USB drive


Download the latest SYNC® software update to a USB drive at no charge. You can then install the update in your vehicle. Afterwards, be sure to report the successful installation.


* Activate your SYNC Owner account (if you haven’t already done so), by logging in and registering your vehicle
* Locate an empty USB drive that holds 2 GB or more of data and is not password-protected


1. Log in to your SYNC Owner account.
2. Visit the SYNC Software Updates
If you see the notification, "You have an update available," choose Download SYNC Update.
3. Locate an empty USB drive that has at least 2 GB of free space and is not password protected. When you have a USB drive ready, insert it into to your computer and choose Start Download Process.
When you have the USB drive ready, insert it into to your computer and choose Start Download Process. Follow the accompanying instructions on how to download the files and transfer them to your USB drive.
4. Once you've successfully downloaded the files and transferred them to your USB drive, you'll need to take the loaded USB drive to your vehicle to install the software update files to SYNC.

How to install SYNC® updates to your vehicle


The method for installing your latest SYNC software update will vary, depending on your vehicle model and year.
If you have a 2017 model year SYNC-equipped vehicle or newer, or one of the 2016 and 2015 vehicles listed below, follow the first set of instructions.
* 2016 model year, SYNC-equipped Edge, Escape, Explorer, F-150, Focus, Mustang.



* 2015 model year, SYNC-equipped Edge, F-150, Focus, Mustang.



If you have an older vehicle that is not listed above, follow the second set of instructions.



First set of instructions

1. Turn on your vehicle as power must remain stable during the update.
Make sure your vehicle is in a well-ventilated area as your vehicle will need to be turned on and running until the update is complete.


2. Plug the USB drive into USB port in the vehicle. Be sure you are using the USB drive with the software updates you downloaded.



3. Press Menu.



4. Scroll to SYNC-Settings.



5. Press OK.



6. Scroll to Install on SYNC and press OK.



7. Select Yes to the prompt that appears on your screen.



8. You will hear an audio prompt explaining that SYNC will reboot and start the update.
SYNC will now be unresponsive for the duration of the update, which may take up to 10 - 20 minutes. 


9. At the end of the installation your SYNC will say “Your SYNC system update is complete. The system will now reboot. Please wait a few moments before trying to use the system.”



10. After this, SYNC will finish rebooting. You can verify the update was complete by scrolling to and selecting SYNC-Settings and then selecting Systems info. The latest software version will display on screen.



11. Once you’ve installed the updates in your vehicle, be sure to report the successful installation to complete the process.

Second set of instructions


1. Take the USB drive with the software updates to your vehicle. Turn on your vehicle, and then turn on the radio. 
Make sure your vehicle is in a well-ventilated area. Your vehicle will need to be turned on, with the engine running between ten and thirty five minutes. Make sure that your vehicle is not in Accessory mode.


2. Turn off Bluetooth on your phone if it is in the vehicle.



3. Plug the USB drive in to your vehicle’s USB port. Make sure it is completely plugged into the port.



4. Press the Phone button in the vehicle.



5. Scroll to Return.



6. Press OK.



7. Scroll to Advanced.



8. Press OK.



9. Scroll to Install Application.



10. Press OK.



11. SYNC automatically detects the files on your USB drive and then displays “Install Application?” Press OK to confirm.



12. SYNC displays “Installing Application” during the process. Do not remove your USB drive or turn off your vehicle while this update is in progress. Shortly after installation has begun, SYNC says “Your download is in progress and the system may reboot several times during the update. Please wait up to 10 min until you hear your SYNC system update was completed. You may then use SYNC.” Ignore this message. It refers to a specific phase of the installation, not the overall update process. While the update is loading, SYNC will not recognize your mobile phone or media device. 



13. In another approximately 10 minutes (timing may vary per update), SYNC says “Installation Complete.” SYNC may also say, “Your SYNC system update is complete. The system will now reboot. Please wait a few moments before trying to use the system.” The system then reboots, which takes several minutes. Do not attempt to use SYNC during this time.



14. SYNC displays “Installation Complete.” Press MENU to exit installation mode. 
It is now safe to remove your USB drive. 


15. Once you have installed the SYNC software updates, you’ll need to pair your phone again. To complete the process, take the USB drive to your computer to report the successful installation.

How to report a successful SYNC installation


After you’ve installed the latest SYNC® software updates in your vehicle, be sure to report the successful installation.27

* To perform the following steps, you must first complete the previous procedure: How to install updates in your vehicle

1. Remove the USB drive used to install the software update from your vehicle’s USB port and take it to your computer.

2. Log in to your SYNC Owner account.

3. Visit the SYNC Software Updates page. If you see a notification saying, "You have recently downloaded an update," then you are eligible to confirm that you were able to update your SYNC system successfully. Choose Confirm Update.

If you do not see the Confirm Update button, you may need to manually report your SYNC software version. Visit the software report page and follow the on screen instructions.

4.You'll be instructed to connect your computer to the USB drive that you used to install the SYNC software update to your vehicle.

When you've inserted the USB drive, choose Report Update to Ford.

Quick Tip

Run a vehicle health report
Now that your SYNC software is up to date, make sure you vehicle's operating systems are performing optimally by running a vehicle health report.

My apologies for the loooong post, but I pulled the above from Ford-Pass.. Related to my 2019, but the process is similar for Gen 2. If you have an older Gen 1, you may have to update to a newer version before updating to the latest version.

Note that there are 2 sets of instructions, depending on your year. Read thoroughly the above before starting your upgrade.
