GEN 2 Sunroof leak?

I was driving to work today and noticed water dripping down from the roof, but couldn’t pin point it while driving. After parking, I noticed that a little bit of water was dripping out from the rear glass switch. It stopped dripping when parked. I’m wondering if there is a leak somewhere or it’s just condensation. Since it seems to drop only when driving, if I take it into the dealer, I’m afraid to get the “unable to replicate” shenanigan. Thoughts?

There’s a moon roof drain hose that is sometimes pinched, not correctly hooked up or clogged that typically features in cases like this. I’m going to go with “not condensation”.

Agree with Smurfslayer: go to a windshield installer or sunroof repair place if the dealer cant fix the 1 of 4 drain tubes. Gen 1 moonroof track broke on me and after the costly replacement, they couldnt figure out the leaky roof. Windshield installer knew right away what the issue was and just replaced the tubing. Either way: ask if the repair techs if they have done this specific work before, or keep looking. Mine was a pain in the arse!

I have a 2019 Raptor SCREW with Pano sunroof, purchased new in September. Leaking from pillar handle every rainy day since day 1. Have had the vehicle at the dealership 3x to find the source of the leak that has been coming out of the A/pillar handle. They could not duplicate the leak or find it but did document that water was in fact coming in as the inside of the handle and air bag was completely saturated. Fed up I took the handle off today during a rain shower, and discovered the leak coming from between the roof and body seam near the top of the windshield. Anyone have any experience or knowledge of this issue or what it took to fix? Contacted Ford directly and sent them video and photos as I am pretty fed up with my dealerships incompetence and inability to fix it. They sent me a case number as I want all of the documentation I can get, My biggest concern it the water damage and possible corrosion to electrical and air bag system. Any advice?

I am pretty sure that black hose in the picture is one of the roof drains. It may not help you any but others can see what the hose looks like. I would try "roping" the windshield glass and caulking it with something. What I mean is, you put a small diameter rope under the windshield trim to get it off the glass or to prop it up off the glass then see if you can get some fine tip sealant in that corner. It may also be leaking from the body side of the molding instead of under that glass. So the same thing on the body side, put some rope under it to prop it and try clear silicone.

I wouldn’t recommend trying to work on the moonroof under warranty unless the issue was emergent. What you’ve done to track it down this far is probably more than enough and any further effort on your part will result in the mechanic getting ticked off and ignoring everything you’ve done just out of spite. If there is one profession that resents being told how to fix something it’s auto mechanics.

I know there have been reports of the drain hose not being hooked up, or having been clogged, but if it’s actually leaking from the roof I’d look at the roof and see if it is visually “off”, It may simply need to be adjusted properly. If nothing is obvious, don’t screw with it. Find another dealer to call and ask them bluntly if they have someone qualified to work on the moon roof. If the answer is no or, the S/A hems and haws, go elsewhere. You don’t want some trained monkey in a shop suit going hands on with your $70k truck.

This is another thing about those mechanic guy from the dealer or anywhere. They think they know it all and often get offended and change attitude when normal folk points something out to them.

Thank you. I'm not attempting to fix it myself (that's what the warranty is for). I was asking if anyone has had the same issue and what/how the dealership did to fix it. It doesn't appear that the leak is coming from the pano roof, but rather from the seam. Spoke to the dealer yesterday and they are going to take it to a specialist who has handled these before. I'm surprised that Ford does not have a TSB on these as the specialist claims to have done many of these types of leaks. Plan is to have it fixed tomorrow. Will keep you posted.

I’m resuscitating this thread. I had occasion to take the truck to the dealer and was complaining of moon roof rattle. I ended up having to go get the truck not repaired due to a long parts wait for this, door latches and a console trim piece. I thought I would take a look at doing an attempt at fixing the rattle based on some youtube videos. If it’s on the internet, it has to be true right....

The dealer ordered new tracks for my moon roof, but the moon roof works - tilts fine, moves back and forth. I wasn’t sure why they went for new tracks again, they just replaced them in August.

Now I’m not so sure of this August moon roof repair. It was raining while I was looking at the rear panel and I counted 4 leaks on just the rear panel area. Nothing making it to the cab, but this newly installed moon roof is leaking at each rear corner, water at one of the ‘clips’ and another place further up on the driver’s side I wasn’t able to see, just feel water.

Now, I never looked at the original moon roof install while raining, so maybe it was leaking before and I just didn’t know it, but 4 leaks seems like poor craftsmanship to me.

I’ve read here on FRF that all moon roofs leak at least some; FRF is on the internet, so that has to be true, right?

just curious to see if anyone else has seen the -properly- installed moon roof leaking into the drain channels during rain or if I’m just a lucky winner.

I’m glad you’ve started this conversation again. My pano functions fine and I really like it.

It’s got the rattle and I have cleaned and lubed the seals. It helps and stayed relatively quiet for a couple weeks. From my understanding, Krytox is not available up here in Canada. Some ingredient is “banned” up here. That’s another story for another time. I’ve used dielectric grease and Superlube so far.

I garage my truck but when it’s out in the rain, I noticed that I get some dripping around the rear pano glass. I’m assuming this water is making its way through the drain system. The interior carpet and pillars are dry as a bone.

I’m very reluctant to visit the dealer to address the rattle and leak. Truck is still under warranty.

In the spring or a least when it warms up again I’d like to take the pano glass out, give it a good clean and lube and hope for a resolution.
