Strange behavior in 3rd gear

I have a 2020 with 3500 miles on it. Since day 1, it’s been repeating the same behavior in third gear while in Normal mode and accelerating normally (happens in sport mode too just not as noticeable). See video attached.

Under normal acceleration, when it shifts into 3rd gear the gas cuts out and RPM’s drop for a moment before getting back into gear. It almost feels like a gear shift within the gear.

It happens every time. The only way to avoid this is by accelerating hard. But any kind of slow to moderate acceleration it’ll happen, usually right at 2000-2200 RPM.

has anybody seen this? I know this transmission is extremely quirky but this particular bug is quite annoying.

You're not supposed to accelerate normally. Drive it like you stole it.

Looks like it’s a hesitation from the skip shifting. On the video it’s going from 1st to 3rd to 5th. Put your foot into it or let it try to save fuel.

Regardless of the gear skips that happens when in normal mode, that temporary throttle loss in 3rd gear is not normal.
@FordTechOne did you have a chance to look at this??? Any thoughts??

From the video is almost looks like a it’s slipping in 3rd or locking/unlocking the converter; did you change throttle position at all during that video? I don’t suspect it’s an actual slip, as the trans has multiple speeds sensors and the TCM will trigger DTCs and a wrench light in the event that slip is detected.

Have you tried doing a battery disconnect or KAM reset (requires ForScan)?

thanks for the reply. Throttle position was constant during the video. I have not tried to troubleshoot anything since I’m not very technically able. I was going to have the dealer look at it during a service.

is it very strange. And like I said it happens every time. It almost feels like a gear shift within the gear - the RPMs drop and throttle is cut for just long enough to drop a few hundred RPMs.

I may have the same condition rearing its ugly head on my 2019.

I’m comfortable using ForScan. What are the steps to reset the KAM? Must be missing something...

I have a similar issue, only happens when truck is still relatively cold and the power almost dies if i'm light on the throttle and shifting from 3rd to 4th. its definitely not the tune which i thought it was at first but i have installed the Cobb TCM Sport+ and it still does it so definitely leaning towards something mechanical with the trans or torque converter would be my guess.

That is normal operation during the first drive when cold. There is another thread on it, they all do it including mine. It’s a slight pause between 3rd and 4th. Nothing to worry about.

I have the same issue on my 2019 but only when its cold.
