Steering issue - dealer says RPG tie rods are the cause?

Sounds like if you reinstall the boots correctly should be fine.

Mine is feeling loose too, but all stock.

However, I am still not convinced it is the shocks needing a rebuild as much as the rack being loose. more investigation in a week or two on my end

I've had to replace the inner heims on my RPG tie rods.
You do have to have a boot on the inner tie rod heim and covering the piston that goes to the Rack.
If you did not have the boot then get them and put it back on with the stock tie rods. It won't take that long and if you have a warranty and it is the rack that is bad then you should get it done under warranty. A little time on your part to swap back to the stock ones is a lot better than shelling out $1K isn't it?
The shop that I referenced does rebuilds and gives a a life time warranty on them. I"d check the inner heim first to make sure it is not loose. It only takes very little movement to throw everything off and would cause weird steering input.

(stock rack and tie rods) I am having the same issue I have a rattling noise on my drivers side only when offroad that I have pin pointed to my rack with only 5300 miles. First dealer blames it on the sb about shock noise I call bs! I am a master certified shop foreman and have double checked all fasteners on the front end myself before taking it to the dealer. I showed the foreman at the dealer the play and made the noise and he says it is normal play but when we went to a new 2014 and I grabbed the tie rod it had very little play and no noise at all. I will be taking it to a diff dealer and show them the noise and excessive play that is present when I grab the drivers side tie rod and shake it.

I am having the exact same issues(excessive play and rattle on the drivers side) I actually had the drivers side tie rod replace under warranty because I thought that was where the noise was coming from but when I got home I noticed that they didn't put a clamp on the inner tierod boot and also noticed the shaft that goes into the rack was what was moving and making all the noise. I took it back up and they said the play is "within specs" and is normal. I just can't buy that.

Have them show you the specs and where your rack is. They can't. Because it's BS

The spec that they "say" is b/s so I bought a rack replaced it myself and aligned it. The new rack still has a small amount of play but not as much as before. But the noise is still present. So for the time being I have just said f it on the noise. I made sure that all bolts are correctly torqued for the front end components that way i can drive and not worry that something is going to fall off. I am to the point that the noise is coming from the shocks.
