I did Ophir last year in the opposite direction. It was fun. Awesome camping spot right after you turn off of the hwy in silverton. I figured blackbear was going to be suspect in a Raptor. I heard it is awesome though.

Ophir may work out better though, since it brings us back into Silverton. Takes out Engineer from the HWY. But thats a pretty tight trail at the bottom anyways.

Yeah Black Bear would be extra exciting in the raptor lol. If a group is assembled it probably wouldn't be the best pass to attempt as some people may not be willing to try or understand the difficulty and dangers involved. Not sure if you've done imogene but a lot of the same views from black bear can be seen from imogene. Imogene's pretty cool!

You could still do engineer taking ophir. Just adds a little bit of million dollar hwy drive time.

You're definitely right about the group thing. Ophir was kinda blah though. Although last year it had 20' snow banks at the pass.

Million Dollar HWY + 25 psi in tires = lots of fun at higher than suggested speed.

Lol specially with no sway bar. Last time I was out there I had my grabbers squealin around the corners. Thought I was pretty cool till some crotch rockets blew past me:baby:

Ophir is kinda blah when you compare it to the rest, but if you spend most of the day on Imogene and just use Ophir as a way back.. I dunno its not so bad. Last time I was on Ophir it was kinda eventful. I was pretty far up along the edge ascending out of Ophir when from away's up, I see someone in an escape coming down. I'm watching this dill-hole as he's passing several "last chance" pull off spots. I realize unless I find a spot fast one of us is going to be backing up (and that would probably be me considering this guys lack of common sense would have him rolling his shit down the side of the mountain in reverse). So I'm flying up the mountain trying to find a spot and the best thing I can find is a large pile of rocks built up on the edge. My passenger gets out and spots me as I ease out to every available inch of rock pile. By this time the escapes pretty close, but as I'm waiting I can hear the rocks fall from the weight of the truck. I'm like hurry the **** up! So he goes to pass me, but instead of driving by, he rolls his window down and attempts to carry on a conversation about my truck/Raptors in general. Holy shit dude, no wonder his girl friend looked terrified. Finally he passes and I make it off the ledge. That had to have been one, if not the closest, I've ever come to falling off a pass.

Well, we'll find out when I show up. :) I've been on trails out here (most of them actually) where the jeepers coming down were telling me to not even attempt it. Always attempted it and never had a problem (other than some tight squeezes leading to colorado pin striping). Looking forward to it!!

Damn it. The timing on this doesn't work for me, but otherwise I'd be there. Promise to do it again later in the year? ;)

Have a blast guys. Take lots of pics, eh?

Sounds awesome. I would try and make it, but I am looking at a family trip and not sure that should be the first time camping with my 2 yr old. I plan on coming out there in early August. Really looking forward to some pics and trail reports (esp if ya'll try Black Bear).
