I've also shared this info, which may be helpful to some that want to save some cash, and have a little more flexibility.

My buddy has had GREAT experience with this radio, the Yaesu FT-2900R:

Amazon.com: Yaesu FT-2900R 75 Watt 2 Meter VHF Mobile Transceiver Amateur Ham Radio: Car Electronics

Only catch if you read the fine print is that it only "receives" communication between frequencies 136-174Mhz and we run on 151.625. HOWEVER! There is a simple "mod" you can do to the radio, which unlocks transmitting AND receiving on the entire range! That's what my buddy did... works perfect, and you can type in any frequency you want to transmit on, at any time! Which is very nice...

Here is a "how-to" on the modification (supposedly not legal in the eyes of the FCC)...

Yaesu ft-2900r frequency modification mars mod

So for $220, you can have a full function 75-watt radio which works across a very broad spectrum, and you can type in you own frequencies! Many other models (most in fact) require that you program channels in those ranges.

Hope that helps! We've done dozens of runs... so my recommendations come after experience with a variety of plotters and radios.

Hell Noah, maybe you should invest in the Yeasu ones too, mod them (link above) and then sell to members already modified... just don't announce that you're selling them modded on the forum publicly! LOL

Yeee!! That kinda just sold me on the Yeasu...as long as its modified..haha

So, if I understand it correctly you would essentially have two radios in one??
A HAM radio along with the VHF?? that would be sweet...then I would have to get my HAM radio license:pepper:

What's nice is that you can punch in the frequency you want at any time... most radios like the ICOM (which I have, and love) they are all pre-programmed and you have to change with computer and software.

The above mod isn't "legal" so to speak... so it's more of a DIY type mod. But it's a great little radio, and the mod isn't too bad if you have a good magnifying glass and steady hands! The soldering point you have to remove is REALLY small.

I may or may not have this mod done... lol... The 7900 gives you dual band for 108-520, 700 999.990 MHz (cellular blocked... I use a 7900 and program it so I can add local channels to my scanning ability.. I also have all of the normal channels found here and since it does a pretty broad range will do the small walkie talkie type you buy at walmart for 20.00. This is the FRS spectrum... The 7900 has a removable face so you can easily locate the brains out of the way and just have the faceplate where you can see it.. It works well and communicates to the Icom (my personal favorite) while off roading very well.. This past weekend I was passing Metcalf and Ihavegas could hear me in Milpitas so about 20 miles in a congested dense populated area... The 7900 is a bit more than the 2900 but it allows features most of you will never use... But does let you talk in other ranges and removable faceplate (that parts huge for me)... If you look around you can get the 7900 as low as 299.99 mostly in the 300 to 350 range... More than the 2900 but for what you get well worth the money if you need the removable faceplate....

AS far as the mod goes, well it was a very nerve racking thing to watch being done to a radio (not mine).... But its do able by most with patience..
