does everyone run a specific type of spare gas can, I have a steel one, but don't know whether that or a plastic one would be better for offroading with

my truck is 99% stock, no bed cage or anything else to carry stuff with

What you have should be fine. You should be able to use tie downs to secure everything. A bed rack is nice but not necessary. Maybe some guys who use tie downs could post some pics to give you an idea.

I was just curious if one would be better than the other for taking the abuse we would be putting them through

Don't use the cheap tie downs, get lots of tie downs of you don't have a chase rack, most importantly get a radio, prefer a off road mounted it does 50watts and a good antenna plus 3db gain. Handhelds are limited to 4 or 5 watts and just don't get out there very far. So a good radio is a real must... After the Lost coast run I would get a radio that is for off road and not a marine radio, but in a pinch a Marine radio works... Just have to tell us going in and can not use them near waterways... And get helmets any kind of brain protection is better than nothing..

I've seen guys with both. Typically plastic but I don't know if one is better than another. Being secured is most important.

So, should I add you to the list? Sounds like you're going
i have been dealing with icom and lowrance recently. i will definitely have radios for sale soon. if i can make it for the run, (and if you want he handheld) i will be able to bring them with me. if you want a lowrance gps, let me know and i will get you in the shop for an install.

It would be awesome if you could put some sort of group buy for the guys who need radios. I nice programmable handheld or the a Icom 5021.

as long as I get the required stuff for this, and I don't have a job still or have those days off if I do get a job by then, I'm in for the run

I'll need to get my radios reprogrammed to include that channel. I assume that wont be to difficult.
