I'm not sure how necessary this really is or how concerned any of us really need to be about snow and ice build up on LEDs. Having driven in winter conditions for 30 years, the build up sucks for sure, but I've never felt compelled to "fix" it. I knock it off at gas stops and clean the lights with the gas station window cleaner...that always works just fine.
BUT, I'm a tinkerer and not opposed to doing the unnecessary just to do it, like so many of you...
I posted about this earlier and just got it done...
I bought 5 watt/foot 12v heat cable. Connected it to an open up fitter switch and ran it behind the Amber lens, against the glass of the LED. I was going to dab hot glue or silicone caulk to hold it (and then peel it off later) but the lens snapped right on and presses the cable in place nicely.
i have run it now for a few days-no fires
when it comes to highway slush on the lights, even a light with no ice build up is going to get coated with crap...so I don think melting ice to reveal a light coated with road grime will return the output to usable levels....BUT...if it works I think this will make a difference when its bitter cold, there is no slush, the snow is flying, (or your plowing through drifts) and you have snow build up on the light... we may know for sure in 72 hours....
