Theories on Rods breaking from what I have read over the years. Connecting rods are very strong under a compressive load. Compression and power stroke rods will rarely break even under a good amount of boost. Unless your detonating then all bets are off . Detonation pressures are very extreme and rods pistons will not last long .
The common point in cycle rods break is at the point of pushing the exhaust out and drawing in the intake charge . So the piston is causing a lot of tensile force on rod and it pulls rod apart. The higher the rpm more tensile force starts becoming exponentially high.
Think about it. your doing a hard boost pull and end of a run you snap the throttle closed and decelerate . You just went from boost to a high vacuum in an instant. Most engines blow at end of the track when they let out.
I have changed my driving style for quite a few years now . I tend to roll into the throttle and roll out of it . No sudden throttle changes if I can help it. When I was was doing my dragy runs in my Gen 2 I had enough road at the end to ease out of throttle and slow down . Made sure oil was full and over 200 deg . Stuff just breaks

Well that's just it, PCM has no clue what's coming.
Throttle and injector response comes from the trust values from the tranny but the power isn't there so the PCM holds off on AFRs and then the air comes now the PCM tries to make up for it.
Good info.

Keep in mind, I’m no tuner or engine guru, I just like to ask questions.

I believe both the 6.2 and 5.0 run the copperhead ecu. Wonder what is the difference in that the 5.0 seems to do ok with all different kinds of forced induction.

Sorry @MurderedOutSVT if I am detailing your thread

Completely different engine designs, the 5.0 does well with forced air induction.

I was meaning more along the lines of the tuning issues on the 6.2 that does not “seem” to be there on the 5.0’s, specifically the ecu not knowing what is happening with the lag in boost and other items mentioned.

I'm not sure if 6.2 rods are all that weak. S.h.!.T just happens. I known guys don't take care of anything cars run like clockwork vs. Guys that are meticulous about servicing their cars and their stuff breaks.

Not as weak as lightning 5.4 rods. It cost ford 6 dollars per rod in the lightning 5.4s. 48 bucks per engine vs manely rods in the 03 4.6 cobra. That was 300+ dollars a set cost to ford. Anybody buying a performance vehicle would opt for stronger rods, bean counters always win and maximize profits.
Agreed... sometimes **** happens

My guess is the piston failed and caused the rod to poke a hole.
If memory serves me right, this is the 3rd "rod broke" raptor this year on the forum. 1 was a hydrauliced engine bending the rod, the other was broken vale spring caused dropped valve = smashed piston and lunched the rod.

At the Baja 1000 I had a chance to discuss the first Raptor R with one of the engineers that was on the Baja team. He said the stock rotating assemby was durability tested and rods were good to 500 hp. Pistons he kinda danced around what they were good for. Probably why squirters were added for cooling on the underside of the piston dome.

If you are going to build a better motor be aware of the limited supply for parts. The 6.2 never really got good aftermarket support and Manley was the only supplier of better rods. Its such a niche market now, I think there is leadtime to get sets made.

I know earlier in this thread Livernois came up. Dont waste your $$. Its dumb expensive and doesnt make anywhere near the power a simple Whipple or Roush makes.
I dont have limited first hand experience with the Pro-Charger on a Raptor, but the few trucks I have been around always struggled. Mostly tune issues.. My buddy did pop his 6.2 engine with a D1SC
For some reason the procharger is amazing on an LS and hard to get right on the Raptor

Yes, there has been a long history of procharger Raptors throwing rods on this site, especially Henessey S H I T. Livernois is expensive, but if you need a motor and they are the only game in town, it's an option. Seems short and long blocks have been almost non-existent for the last few months. I hope somebody steps up and makes a couple hundred of them.

Man I am speechless! And I am feeling for you. Sounds like the forum has come together to help with your options. Your one of the first guys in the welcome wagon to make a friend and help new members out. We are going to stand by you until this truck is back on the road or out of your driveway. I’m hoping a new motor is in your near future.
