So, thoughts have been running through my head lately... (Managed to receive a great "At-A-Boy" at work. 35% payout effective Monday morning... Company trying to save money. Last November they hit me with paycut to help pay for a third finance manager. That finance manager quit after 8 months - do you think I got that payout back? Hell no! )

Haven't even closed on my new home and I get clobbered with this great news...

I told my wife when we signed for the new home that she can take a year off work to work on her dream. She wants to write children books. I want to be able to give her that opportunity.

I have a my 2011 Molten Orange Screw with every option except stripper pole and LOTS of adds! Not quite sure of value but have to believe the aftermarkets still have value to them as well...

I'm going to get a LOT of shit remarks from this but am willing to throw it out there to see what others would do in my situation...

So - here we go:

My 2011 is loaded with MANY extras and sits at about 63k miles on her. I have run Mobil 1 since day 3 when I got her home from El Paso. I've put a lot of work into her and have enjoyed every bit. 5 years later I still park her and look back at her with a stupid grin on my face EVERY time.

Now the dilemma... I can sell it and take the equity from her and lease a new truck for three years with one upfront payment (Back under full bumper to bumper warranty with no worries) and pocket the rest of the equity for extra savings on bad months (it makes me feel like I'm finally growing up at 45 and making real adult decisions)

By then the new Raptor will HOPEFULLY have the 5.0l TT in it and things will have settled down, my wife with either be an established author with a constant income or be back to work teaching with a dedicated income. I can then get one of the newer Gen 2s. BTW - I love the GEN 2 look just not a fan of the ecoboost... (Also, will the Gen 1s have lost a majority of their value by then with a rig approaching 90k miles? Speculation and no one will every know...)

Or keep her and when shit goes wrong, take her in and have her fixed and make things work with my new lower income. Things will become much tighter to say the least but I believe we can do it (I hope)

My problem is I always want the latest and greatest. (I'm the "High Maintenance" one in our relationship with my wife.)

Thoughts... BTW - THIS WEEK ******' SUCKS!!!

Feel free to PM me with any questions or thoughts...

I would keep her. Paid for is much nicer than latest and greatest in my book. Who knows what will be in the future Raptor. Maintenance will likely cost much less than a lease with front and back end payment.

Unless you are using it for business leases in my opinion are normally not a good deal.

Having no car payment is fantastic. Id much rather drive a paid off vehicle than be tied to a loan/lease.

Cheaper to keep her...
Seriously though, I'd keep your paid off rappy and enjoy not having a payment for a while.
Sucks to hear about the pay cuts, I too have received several of these "gifts" in the last year or so. Good times indeed.

Three glaring issues you have. You just got a pay cut, your wife wants to quit her job, and you just signed for a new house. This is your dilemma, not the truck.

Unless you're been a home owner for a while and are vested in the market, imo now is not the best time to buy a house. The market is white hot right now and prices are inflated. If you've been a homeowner, then its relative.

You need to have a conversation with that company you work for. Depending on the outcome of that talk, you may want to start looking for another job.

Explain to your wife that now is not the best time to chase her dream. Competition is no doubt fierce in childrens books. That will take time. She can still pursue that dream by working on it at night and the weekends, and keep her job at the same time.

Sell your Raptor. It will not be worth what it is (now) when it has to compete with a newer model in the marketplace. The Gen I has had the luxury of zero competition for several years. The current value reflects that, but your window to make out well on the price is closing quickly.

Sorry to hear about the situation. Looks like you'll have some free time on your hands.

You know you'll never get your money out of the truck like you might hope to. Besides, didn't you just get it to its glory stage? Keep it if you can. No monthly payment means your rolling month to month debt is lower. Better from a cash flow stand point.

If you have to sell it for finance reasons, sell it. Worrying about money all the time can make you miserable.

Here's an idea, rent your truck out to metal neck. Quit paying your current mortgage, and when they kick it out, go live in the basement of the new house while it's being finished. Lol...

Thanx @Yukon Joe!

When I asked my wife about this situation her immediate comment was "You'll regret your decision if you sell your truck. - You love that truck." - That was great to hear because I know I would.

So with that said - we need to move on and make things work.

Thanks for the input guys. I needed to hear it from other members and make sure I'm not making a rash decision over a sudden change in life. Time to step in and make things work...

My situation is similar yours, (see below)*.

You have a number of issues, but if you break each one down, it will be easier to find your path. You have already received a lot of great advice in this thread.

Job: Find a new one quickly. You may not find one that is equal to your previous pay, but at least you might find a stable company. The one you described isn't worth your skills.

New House: I would back out of the house. There will be others on the market when your life is more stable. Unless this is your dream house, I would put off buying.

Wife: Keep her! Any wife that tells you to keep you truck is priceless. At any sign of trouble, my wife wants me to "sell the truck". Unfortunately, you may need to break your promise for her to stop working and write the books. A compromise might be for her to work part time.

Leasing: Bad idea. Just think of it this way, the dealer is making money off of you by leasing. This is money you cannot spare. Buying an old clunker might be a better option than leasing.

Raptor: Having no payments is a wonderful feeling. However, the equity value will decrease in time. This is offset with the value it means to you, and it sounds like it's worth more to you than the money you might get. As mentioned before, if you NEED the money, you can always sell. But for now, I would keep the Raptor. If in 2 years, the 5.0L Raptor comes out, you can trade up then. Also, I was reading the thread about high mileage Raptors 100,000 miles plus. No big issues were reported, so we own reliable trucks.

* I ran into some back problems in April and couldn't work. I have Short and Long Term Disability, but it took 8 weeks of no income before the insurance sent my first check. My wife wanted me to sell the truck right away, but instead I took out money from my 401k to cover the bills. Right now I'm only getting 60% of my pay on LTD, but I was lucky enough to take the tax-free option on my benefits package, so it's almost the same as my previous net pay. It's difficult, but I still have my Raptor.

I also would say you should keep the truck, unless you are really looking to save money, you could sell it and buy a 20 year old Toyota Corolla to put around in, if things aren't that bad, keep your baby and let your wife work part time for some extra cash until her dreams come to light. This day and age a family needs two incomes, period! Good luck with your situation bro.
