Well, the dealer provided me a quote of $8,700 to repair the rust. They would be replacing both the left and right aperture panels to be able to eliminate all of the rust.

Sounds about right. The invoices I saw were around $3500 per side when I did mine. If the rust comes back, I'm bailing.

My Truck is out of warranty and Ford denied the repair. Ran it up the chain with out luck. Going to have to pay to fix since I want to keep it a few more years. Thought it was 10 year coverage not 5.

Where are you guys from that are having this rust issue? Salt on the roads in the winter?

Michigan lots of salt in the winter. Not sure if under coating would have been any better I seems that any course of action taken over the years still has the same outcome unless you just don't drive it in the winter, what fun would that have been.

It's called the rust belt. Rock salt, liquid calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride.

I have two cans on 3M/Mar-Hyde one step rust converter, and six cans of Rustoleum Pro black satin on the way from Amazon. Going to go after any rust I can find under my truck before next winter. I'm going to pick up some 3M undercoating and do the rear wheel wells with that as well. It sucks, but there's nothing you can do other than drive a beater or move. I doubt I'm moving, but picking up a beater for winter is a definite possibility.

That is a Ford issue, not a "what area are you in" issue.

I live Saskatchewan where there is tons of salt all winter, with widely varying temps.

I just sold my 2010 Ram daily driver. By the end I was pretty much ignoring it. It would sit with heavy salt for months, and was regularily in and out of a heated garage....so worst case scenario.

It had close to zero rust, with the only issues being surface rust at a bad stone chip and beside a small bumper dent.

There really is no excuse other than substandard metal protection at the factory.

I see rusted out older Ram trucks constantly around here (SW Ohio). Doors, tailgate, front and rear wheel wells and the rockers. Most are well over 10 years old though. 7 years just isn't that old for rust to start showing up on any exterior panels.

My truck is now 4 years old. In 3 years, my truck will not have any holes in the rockers or any other sheet metal either- but, give it ten more years and it will. If I start to fight it now though it'll be one of the few 2013s that's not all rusted out down the road. I managed to stop a lot of it on my old truck with rust-converter, but it was really too late at that point. Trying to stay ahead of it with this truck.

I will agree that rust depends on the manufacturer and how it's built. I've seen some cars owned by family members that were 15 years old with no special treatment, and they looked perfect underneath. I think it's got more to due with the manufacturer properly painting the bottom and the cavity portions of the vehicle than any coating the metal gets before paint.

Any way to get those plugs for the holes?

I took my steps off yesterday and the paint is bubbled on both sides under the rear mount of the steps under the door. My rocker on the passenger side is gone on the bottom, might be able to patch a section since its not up the side yet. My driver side ill be able to save.
