Replace compressor clutch/pulley or entire compressor?

I can get a Motorcraft compressor for $275 from my dealer, or the clutch and pulley assembly for $175. I have a terrible clacking noise that I’m not sure which its coming from.

Obviously I’d have to recharge the system for an additional cost with a full compressor replacement, but it looks like the work is about the same otherwise.

Anyone have experience with these to know how often they fail vs just being a clutch issue? $100 part difference and maybe another $100 for a vacuum and recharge isn’t going to break the bank, but also if it’s unnecessary, no sense in wasting money.

Replacing the clutch/pulley/coil isn’t a big deal IF you can get in there while the compressor is still mounted. I haven’t done a raptor one but if you can get a puller in there, a long reach snap ring tool (a must), and a small impact, you should be good. No need for recharge since you’re not disconnecting the system.

Biggest thing is setting the right gap to the outer hub plate, idk the one for the ford. I’m sure the interwebs can answer that one.
