Who has removed the collars from the front shocks? Is there anything to it besides installation in reverse?

I am also curious if it damages any of the finish on the shock body.

You'll probably have some scuff and scratch marks where they sat. Purely cosmetic.

I installed perch collars, on my 18, the only cosmetic damage was to my springs from the spring compressor, no biggie.
