Gotcha what you want to do, yeah that might be somewhat protected, unless you do a boo-boo like this:

yeah I don't abuse it like that, plus there is no way the ol' lady would let me swing a new bumper. Still backpedaling from the 4 new methods that showed up to the house a few days before I left.

Plus, I think it would be a cool twist for the stock bumper. Something you don't see too much of.

hack job

Seems like an interesting idea. Keep us posted.

I'll start hacking away when I get home to see how it comes out. Worst case, I royally screw it up and will have "no choice" but to get a new bumper. So I can order a light bar before I get home, could someone take a quick measurement for me of what the opening would be with the plastic bumpers removed?

that should work well, I appreciate you taking the time to do it. So a 42" curved bar and maybe fill the gaps with a small pod light or dually style. Should be fun

The honeycomb behind the bumperettes comes off with 2 nuts behind the bumper. A bitch to get to with the bumper still on, but possible. I've taken mine off twice now for different reasons.
I too looked into the idea of putting a larger RDS light bar in that area with the bumperettes removed. The only issue that I could see is that the bumperette area is where your frame horns are. You would have to shave some of these off to make it fit right. Other than that, it will fit. I put a 20" RDS in the front bumper and the curve doesn't completely match up with the bumper, close, but not exact. I believe a longer bar would exaggerate that issue.

To install a light bar, the way you envision, would require to cut in to the frame horns to an extend that the bumper would fall off.
