Either of you guys have the fans programed to come on at the lower temps, or just swapped out the mechanical Tstat and called it done?

I am running a Full Race FMIC, so my shutters were removed. I did not do anything special with my fans, but since they do not come on until you reach temps higher than 210, mine never come on.

If anyone else here said that, I’d be thinking some casual, enthusiastic use.

Were you hearing the sound of popping as the metal contracted? Think machine gun after 3-400 rounds dumped or about 12-1500 sustained fire?

My old Audi Quattro Turbo Coupe had a turbo timer for cool down cycle. That turbo would get red hot!
Lots of turbo lag too. Manually adjustable waste gate and a locking differential.
I miss that car. It was a Savage beast.

Turbo timers are for oil cooled turbos. Modern turbos are oil and water cooled and convection cycles coolant while they cool down making turbo timers unnecessary.

Your glowing exhaust housing on that turbo is cause for concern. It means either your EGT's are way too high from too lean of a tune or your cats are clogged and the exhaust gases are not escaping fast enough to dissipate the heat. Either way you're cooking your exhaust housing, turbine wheel, CHRA and possible your pistons.

If both sides are glowing then I would tend to learn towards a tune problem. Running too lean increases EGT's. If only one side is glowing I would go with something restricting the exhaust flow like a clogged cat.
