At 14,000 miles an inspection during an oil change on the road at a Ford dealership showed oil leaking in the skid plate area. They told me they thought the oil pan might be leaking and when I got back home to Colorado to have my local dealer look at it.
At 17,000 miles my closest Ford dealership in Loveland, CO (1 hour away) determined that the rear main seal was what was actually leaking. They had the truck for over a week and supposedly had to take out the transmission twice to finally fix the leak, under warranty of course.
Now at 21,000 I needed another oil change so I alerted my local trusted independent to check for any further leakage. He found some oil building up inside the skid plate as well as dripping off the area near where the drain plug is. It only used 1/2 quart over 4000 miles so it is a very slow leak.
I now must leave on another long road trip to Florida and will have to have the truck looked at and repaired in St. Petersburg. Not sure I trust the Loveland dealer to fix this problem anyhow.
Has anyone else seen this problem with rear main seals?
Is it possible it could be a leaky oil pan instead?
Any advice would be appreciated on how to get this problem handled once and for all.
It's not just getting the repair done under warranty that matters, I also need reliable transportation during a series of very long road trips I must make in the next few months. Obviously I am checking my oil levels regularly.
Thanks in advance.
