I guess I'm to old, I know adding turbos to an engine is a bad thing but manufacturers keep doing it. We used to call it artificial horsepower. Super charging was great for horsepower for short distance. But there is no replacement for displacement. But being old I remember when going four wheeling had nothing to do with horsepower. Accept in sand drags. Four wheeling was all about torque. You never needed to go 100 mph on the Rubicon trail. No matter what manufacturers do they will not produce a trophy truck. Not gonna happen no way no how. Your going to get a trophy truck look in a pavement queen Dodge or Ford. I don't like the v6 motor cause I'm old. Pushing a motor that hard 24/7 is not good no matter what anyone tells you. I have a TRX but had a Raptor v8. Put a v8 in a Raptor and I'll buy it. Until then we should be glad we like trucks and look down on cars... Yall have a great day and pray for a v8.
I am old also, I remember when V8s were worn so bad at 50k miles you needed a cutter to take the lip off the cylinder to get the piston out.
I remember the V8 in the 79 mustang that made 125 hp.
I remember when a boss 429 was "underrated" and the true HP was less than a 5.0 coyote today.
I remember when we got our first VCR, yet some how I haven't owned one for over a decade (maybe 2)

Time moves on and things change.

I get what you are saying, but how did the V6’s perform back then? I assume someone made one at least. Probably safe to say that they have benefited from the passage of time as much as the V8’s have.

If there were one perfect engine choice then there would be no need for anything else.

A person who daily drives their raptor would probably prefer the ecoboost. Me, my truck sits most of the week and then goes to play offroad when I get the chance, that or a Taco Bell run, so I don’t mind the fuel mileage and enjoy the sound/feel.

Yes things change, sometimes for the better of the consumer, sometime to better align with the companies goals (better for the company) and probably usually a combination of both.

I have no personal issues with the ecoboost, even owned a gen 1 eco and it was pretty cool. I personally for my use case with the raptor would prefer a v8 though. If I were buying an F150 for a daily driver or even a work truck I would probably lean toward the ecoboost.

I know I mentioned sound as a reason I prefer a V8 even though it is about as important to performance as the color of the vehicle, neither would play a roll. But towards the total driving experience I believe it does, as would color of the vehicle.

Just for what it is worth. I guess I felt like typing.

Has anyone looked at what Ford is putting in the 2020 GT? Yup, "With its track-proven 660 horsepower twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6". Imagine that? 660 hp out of a 3.5 ecoboost. I have been around the block a time or two and watched live the landing on the moon. I hear many of you with valid arguments for a V8 but in reality, is it the best choice?

I have owned a Jaguar XJS with it's V12. That was one silky smooth engine with lots of torque. Basically the same displacement as the V12 in several Lambo's ....but they had 4 valves instead of two and wilder cams. Its main problem was all that cylinder "surface area" created a lot of heat from just plan ole friction if nothing else. Take todays engines specifically designed to run off of turbo boost, add variable cam timing, better geometry of the engine itself. For example, take a look at the engine in Honda's CRF450 vs say a '95 KTM 600. The CRF's better geometry allows Honda to use a piston ...basically without a "skirt". The reduction in reciprocating mass among other things lets that 450 out do the 600 by a huge margine and add to that, 30% lighter engine. Engine design has come a long long way since the V8 was coined.

No matter how you slice it, a six cylinder engine will be more efficient than an eight. Efficiency = power. Yes, most of us have grown up around the V8 and have come to love the sound but have you ever heard the purrr of a V12? My Raptor most assuredly does not purrr, she has a much more angry bark and I have come to love it. If I were Ford and wanted to answer that HP issue I would start with the ecoboost, strengthen components and let her rip.

I had originally planned to hold out for an "R" but the more I learn about the Raptor, the more I appreciate what Ford has done....Especially when compared to the TRX...what a boat anchor! The higher hp may make it win drag races but I did not buy a Raptor to drag race. Even running hard at 80+ in the desert I have never felt the Raptor had used up all the power available and needed more. Some times I feel like it all boils down to bragging rights so you can say "My balls are bigger than yours!"

Funny you mention the moon landing, I sat on the floor in my parents living room watching that on their black and white tv with the rabbit ears pointing towards the moon!
