Raptor Fun: in R/C Scale

If you enjoy your Raptor, but would prefer to break something at lower cost—I’d suggest considering a remote controlled scale model truck.

I purchased a Traxxas Unlimited Desert Racer (UDR)—roughly 1/7th scale. It has an independent front/solid rear axle setup with remote reservoir shocks in all corners, fancy LED lights (including brake lights), and tops out at 52 mph (measured using the optional GPS Bluetooth app).

Of note, it has a rudimentary yet effective stability/traction control setup which I can dial up/down—to address my lack of skill.

It’s a pricey toy (batteries/charger/upgradedspare parts), but inevitably when I break something—the damage to the wallet will be minimal (hopefully).

R/C has come a long way since I was a kid in terms of realism, engineering, technology, and accessories.

The bigger scale stuff is nice because it can clear the grass instead of dragging on the bottom constantly. I want to get a 1:5 scale next, something that can rip it through 4" tall super thick fescue grass.

We built a twin for the gen2 we had. Just need a gen3 body now! Traxxas are fun and can take a hell of a beating.

I've always ran HPI Savages. Something about that 30% smell. I have Excursion and F too fiddy bodies

Not trying to de-rail the thread, but have you all seen the 1/4 scale air planes? Something like a P47 with a rotary engine, those are seriously cool.

I think a roughly 1/4 scale trophy truck would be awesome. Especially with a little Moruzzi V8 in it, 1” shocks, and 10” tires lol.

No i always thought wrecking a plane would be worse than rolling the truck 10X

Following thread for updates.

Looking ar a pair of these for my boys, 9 and 10. They keep braking the cheap ones from Amazon. The 10 year old takes it apart and trys to fit it while I am at work.

Looking at the Raptor body for one and some type of buggie for the other.

And you are correct. RC has come a long way since the Grasshopper.

If you want a good basher, the 4WD Slash Trucks are the way to go. They take abuse like no other. The 2WD versions are too tail happy to be fun to drive.

I still run old Tamiya stuff around- the common parts are still available and cheap, even for the old stuff. I have a brushless motor and 11.1V LiPo on one of my TA02s and it'll do 70 MPH easy.

All the new motors and electronics fit the old cars. The only challenge is finding a LiPo battery shape/size that fits where the old flat pack went, or modifying the car to work with a different shaped battery. I modify the cars to take the new batteries, as they haven't yet figured out that a LiPo pack in the exact size and shape of the old NiCd packs would sell like hotcakes.
