I've been running a hero5 session and it does not like hot temps. Particularly mounted next to the rear view mirror. It works fine affixed to a grab handle but shuts off sometimes at the top of the windshield.

I'm still debugging a long term setup I am still using usb to socket power

I have my GoPRO hooked up to my mirror as well. I have had any issues with it shutting off from the sun (knock on wood). One wire has power when the ignition it turned and a different wire is always hot. I am not sure if it has a timeout, haven’t tested it.

Does the GEN2 have a fuse box on the passenger side footwell like the GEN1's do? If so, you should be able to find an always on lead. I have the blackvue battery pack that will run on the battery for several hours, leaving the camera running.

Great info guys! Thanks for all the input. Camera came today so as soon as I find some time I'll mess around with wiring setup.

I have the camera already but not the truck, so I'm subscribing. Don't know if your camera has the ability to record with motion only when parked like the new one I ordered and had in my previous vehicle does, but that requires ignition power with the backup battery in the camera, and then will likely kill it when parked for long periods of time.

This magic box idea sounds cool too, don't know much about those but I've heard good things. I'm just going to tie it into ignition power from something in the mirror like my radar detector will be - used the same power cable for both in my last car with no problems. Don't have any reason to "waste" an upfitter switch but I do now see the benefit of being able to shut it off sometimes as others have mentioned..... :evillol:

I just installed the black view system, the power pedals fuse seems to have power all the time. For the switched fuse I used the radio fuse, seems to be working so far.

Just got back from a trip with a new 128g sd card, approved by go pro. random shut offs right away, so I swapped the known good 64g card and got the same thing. I believe the battery was low and my usb to lighter adapter worked loose and I ran the gopro battery down to below 5% or whatever the shut off threshold is. I swapped to the plug (my wife was using the 2 port lighter usb adapter) and it seemed to work, but only 1 hot day. I’m not using the auto recycle option, I’m keeping on 2.7k x 60fps, getting me about 4 hours of recording time. I am just deleting periodically via phone app.

So I’m keeping the go pro mounted up high to see if that works out. if so, I’ll wire in a usb power cable to the mirror or thereabouts.

the only thing that i'd add is that if you choose to tap the rear view mirror for power, be aware that when auto start/stop is functioning, the truck shuts off and after a few seconds, kills the power to the rear view mirror, and thus will shut off anything leaching power off of it.
