Question about powering my Dash Cam

Hi all.

I have a BlackVue dash Cam which it great BTW. I have it connected with their Majic switch which automatically turns the dash cam off when the voltage goes below 12 V to prevent battery discharge. Lately, if the car is parked more than 10-12 hours the dash cam ends up turning off because it drops below the 12 V threshold. I’ve been contemplating getting their battery which gives about 24 hours of run time. I use it on another car which I hardly drive, but I need 3-4 days on the Raptor when I leave it at the airport.

I was considering a yellow top Optima battery since they claim 13 V when the car is parked.

Anyone have any experience or input on this?

I use a 20000mah power brick that charges while I’m driving. Does the same thing as the expensive BlackVue battery thing

Do you also use a BlackVue? How did you wire the battery to the camera? Do you have to swap wires every time you park the car just to have it run off the battery?

Yes blackvue 750s. Make a male usb end and wire directly to the power wires for the blackvue. You can google the pin outs to find positive and negative. You can still use the module to set your cutoff

I’ve been searching around and can’t find a straight answer. USB only provides 5 volts of power. Is the power input on the Blackvue only 5 volts? This would make any dash cam hard wiring kit compatible with the Blackvue cams.

It looks like either a micro or mini USB connector in the images I pulled up, so yes, it would operate on 5v

Blackvue doesn’t use the standard USB input for power. Most of the info out there suggests that the camera needs 12 volts but now I’m wondering if I feed 5 volts into it if it’ll run reliably, if at all.

A friend of mine used his jumper pack to power the camera whenever the car was off I’m not sure how long it would last tho
