i think a majority of these "failures" being gm or ford , are due to lack of maintenance more than a design flaw.
Yup exactly . Im obsessed with all my trucks Ive ever owned oddly enough Ive never rally had anything catastrophic happen.

My previous 2 vehicles were gm 5.3 s with the "bad" lifters , never had and issue. But you had check the oil level regularly they both used oil like crazy. It was nice to ck oil on my current engine that is due for oil change and it has not lost anything. ford for the win on that.

Howdy all, I am prospective new Raptor owner that has patiently been perusing cars.com and autotrader for the last 8-10 months waiting for just the right deal. However, in a recent conversation with a friend who is a mechanic, he tried to get me to steer clear of them all together, mainly because of the ecoboost engine. He says he has to work on them more than most other makes, and tried to steer me to GMC (worth noting, he owns an independent shop and is a longtime friend, so I know he’s not being biased by any sort of financial incentive). However, I have driven a yukon for the last five years and was really set on making the switch to a Raptor. How reliable is the ecoboost engine? And for that matter, how reliable is the Raptor in general? Any reason I should avoid? While I am definitely looking to make the switch, I will say that I’ve not had any major issues with my yukon over the last five years and would hate to buy a new truck and have more issues. I realize being on a raptor forum, the responses may be biased, but any insight is appreciated! Should I go for it?

Who is your mechanic, Sasquatch, ME120? Little forum joke.

I should be noted that the DI eco-boosts should be avoided. Since the raptor pioneered the port/DI mix it fixed probably the last issue with the engine minus the cam phaser nonsense. The pushrod LS motors are work horses however, the new cylinder deactivation and new lifters with the solenoid activated springs are a bit of a shit show. 5.3’s with trans from the 99-2004 tahoes and Silverados will EASILY go 300k when maintained.
The Gen 1 3.5 GTDI engines are no different than any other direct injected engine; fuel quality and maintenance are key in preventing carbon buildup. I wouldn’t say they should be avoided, just be cautious if you buy one used.

Id say you’d have about an equal chance of either brand breaking… this is my first eco boost. Its great, im not like a fan boy or anything. I look at the raptor as a total package. Its the suspension, the aluminum body, factory 35’s and yea the eco boost is cool, but would I rather have a v-8 ? Yea i think most guys here would…
V8 is just a cylinder configuration. The 3.5 HO is the highest performing and most efficient engine ever offered in a Raptor, or any F-150 for that matter. The 5.2 S/C would be impressive, but if it even happens we’re probably looking at a 100k truck. It’s more about the engine design than the number of cylinders; the old 6.2 is proof that cylinder count is not equal to performance.
