PPF on Inside of Tailgate?

While installing the bed extender yesterday I noticed small squares of PPF (assuming) toward the top inside part of the tailgate. These seem to align with the bushings just above the tailgate latch. Does anyone else have this or know the purpose? The PPF is deformed and bunches up where it makes contact when the tailgate is closed.

Apologies if this is addressed somewhere. Tried a search but not the most obvious topic to find easily.

Seems like a good idea if Ford did that. Curious why it would move so much while the tailgate is closed.

Mine looks like that (2017) I asked my PPF specialist about replacing them because they are bunched up and he said it would do it again so I've left it.

I have this as well on my ‘19. Theoretically speaking, I assume based on how crunched up it is, it’s protecting the paint from some bolt or something that Ford couldn’t relocate.

its a rubber bumper if i recall correctly.

If you get a ronin (or other) pneumatic tailgate dampener they come w/ a patch of same stuff to add more paint protection.
