Power steering rack ?

So I've gone through my share of pumps till now but my rack has held strong. It is finally starting to go on me, has some play, and is making some ticking and groaning noises. I've got a Howe Performance PS kit waiting for install and want to replace the rack when I do for continuity. I hear the racks that people are getting from the stealerships are just rebuilt racks. Whats the best place to source them from? Price, quality (new or quality of the rebuild), customer service? For you steering rack warriors like you @Yukon Joe what are your thoughts?

Rock Auto shows that they have new ones from Motorcraft ($370 + $225 core charge). If I recall correctly, there are different part numbers for Super Cabs (133" wb) vs. Crew Cabs (145" wb)

I've gotten a steering rack from Tasca Automotive Group | Providence, RI New & Used Car Dealer It was about $700 or so plus core charge. I had to pay shipping to send the core back... this was a few years ago...


The one that @kaiser mentions might be the way to go. Plus you get an FRF discount with them.

The steering rack comes with new inner tie-rods and plastic boots.

It means if you have aftermarket tie rods then you'll have to remove the stock ones from the steering rack.

The tie rod can be broken down into a few pieces. Inner, outer (connects to the knuckle), and the rod. Which connects the inner and outer.

I'm not sure either!!! But I will understand before long. My Howe kit is waiting for me to decide on a rack too.

Cups, your factory tie rods are a two piece rod, consisting of an inner portion which attaches to the rack, and an outer portion which attaches to the knuckle. The new steering rack apparently comes with the inner portion attached already.

Here is what the OEM rack looks like when you buy it. I too installed the Howe PS system, rebuilt my RPG tierods, and installed a new rack..

Just make sure you bleed the rack well when you get it installed....not just the AN fittings from the Howe kit, but also the two hard lines on the rack (just loosen to gravity bleed)....and take your time!

Because of the increased pressure from the Howe pump, it will exaggerate any small vibration etc in the rack at the extreme end of the steering..
