Heat is an issue and fluid cavitation. In my case my PS pump would get very loud off-road even with my Icon PS res/cooler. The fill line is way too low on the reservoir.

No matter then level you will get pressure bleed from the top and I found filling it to 7/8 full has not caused any serious spillage and my PS pump has remained very quiet off-road.

I have checked the fluid temp several times while off-road and it's never hot so I know my PS cooler is working good. It was the fluid that would bounce around (not being full) and creating air pockets.

Two runs now and so far no PS issues!

The fluid "bouncing" around in the reservoir is a constant issue with my truck, and I don't run it hard. I've heard of an old school racer trick where you put a stainless sponge in the reservoir to act as baffles and keep the fluid some what still. I've looked for stainless sponges that are made to act as fluid baffles, but I can only find metal sponges that you use in the kitchen,a and EXPENSIVE custom aircraft parts.

I've also toyed with the idea of "overfilling" the reservoir, but I'm no hydraulic engineer. Glad to hear its has worked for you. Rebuilding my entire system this weekend. Going to try the 7/8th full thing. My only concern is it building too much pressure and burping out my Icon resi's purge valve thing. Any troubles with that?

Change of plans

I ended up going with the Howe full kit (ordered from Chris@FreedomMotorsports). It is loud on full turns but I don't really mind it. So far so good and the build quality is insane. It looks bulletproof and I am glad I made the purchase.

I think @RDFTS used racing tank foam to keep splash to a minimum and like me, didn't have much luck with that. It was messy and the foam didn't stay in place very well.

For the last two runs that I did where I still had the PSS Reservoir I put a sock over the res. It kept the bleed from the top vent from spraying all over the engine. It worked but looked lame!

I ended up installing a RPG Reservoir that has a drain tube. I route that to the bottom of the truck and no fluid on the engine or anywhere. Just a drop or two after a long run on my garage floor every so often.

My current PS pump has almost 50k on it now and its quiet 99% of the time. It's been so long since it whined I'm convinced my using the RPG res and Royal Purple Synthetic PS Fluid have solved my issues.

That and I never do full-lock donuts :)

I never did the foam even though I purchased fuel grade foam. When I was cutting it, it just seemed like particulars over time would come off and worried it might do more harm. So I still use the sock to cover it. Actually I just cut up 3 pairs of socks for this just a few hours ago, lol

Not sure I would over fill it, wouldn’t that build up a lot more pressure doing that.

Changing the fluid helps a lot as well. I just suck it out with a mighty vac about four times after running it in between each refill and turning the wheels several times.

Got it. I'm serisouly over the PS system in the gen 1's and there dosen't seem to be a fix all option that docent have downsides. I'm debating on trading it in and getting a gen 2, but don't like the transmissions...
