From what I've read, both seem like reliable engines
You drive a lot, so both will depreciate quicker than normal..so who cares
If you're worried about mpg...I bet the difference in cost is insignificant in the long run....

At the end of the day, I would go with what you think will be more fun :)

I'm sitting on the fence right now on what to purchase. I love the new Raptor, I love how it drives, and how it looks. But the thing is I do a lot of driving. I live in San Francisco and regularly driving down to Los Angeles with my wife to see her parents, up to four times month. What do you think is best, get a new Raptor, or get a SuperDuty Diesel which may be better for the excessive miles? I plan to do off roading when possible, both on trails and eventually heavy offroading. I tow my Shelby Mustang at times, but that'll be it on towing. Loads in the bed will be pretty light. Really appreciate your thoughts! Thank you.

You live in SF. and you want a Raptor. Aren’t they illegal in SF?
Your prius owning neighbors will shun and make fun of you. You will be cast out of the high society ring and relegated to peasant only events.

Presumably with your two choices you have room to park and aren’t concerned about vehicle height, say for parking garages, starbucks drive thru, etc.

If your work / recreation ratio is more than 50%, you need to look more carefully at the super duty. if the work side is 75% or more, seriously consider the super duty. but, if you’re not hauling heavy loads and want more performance, lean towards the Raptor. if you’re worried about high mileage, get a Ford ESP. Regardless, get what you want because you’re going to have it a while so you may as well be happy with it.

Get a 5L with the FX4 package. You will spend less and it will do what you need, while also doing just fine on mpg.

From your post...you answered your own question...

Pros:
* I love the new Raptor
* I love how it drives, and
* how it looks.
* But the thing is I do a lot of driving
* I plan to do off roading when possible, both on trails and eventually heavy offroading
* I tow my Shelby Mustang at times, but that'll be it on towing
* Loads in the bed will be pretty light

Cons:
* I live in San Francisco

You want to know if you should "get a SuperDuty Diesel which may be better for the excessive miles?"

Perhaps you haven't notices...There's a new double-tax increase (sales tax and excise tax) on diesel fuel that went into effect in Kalifornia on 11/1/17 raised diesel prices about 50 cents per gallon.

Calculate the difference in MPGs and cost of gas vs. diesel and then let us know if you still want to ask the question regarding the SD Diesel being better for excessive miles.

I have an 18 Raptor and it's a great ride. My dad has a 2017 Super Duty that I've put a few thousand miles on. Both drive great, but the Raptor is a little nicer ride. I'm averaging 15 MPG and the Super Duty is 17 MPG right now. Both are large trucks, but the Super Duty is larger noticeably. The interiors are about the same on both and they both run the same Sync 3 software. The bed is larger on the SD, so that's something to keep in mind if you haul things in the bed frequently. Overall, if I needed to tow or haul things and the Raptor didn't exist, I would get the SD because the 6.7 diesel is very smooth and has great power. I don't need to tow hardly and the Raptor does indeed exist, so I went with it for it's other awesome features.
