phone attachment to upper dash area?

I popped out the dash tray and attached a generic $10
magnetic mount right through the rubber mat/plastic tray frame with machine screws and nuts. Mine is in a Gen 1, but the Gen 2 is essentially the same.

I put it horizontal and the phone rests on the lip of the tray and the magnet just has to hold it from sliding left or right.

Not sweating two small holes in the rubber mat, since you could't see them even if you removed the mount since it's recessed from view. The mat is replaceable as well.
