phone attachment to upper dash area?

Have you considered the CD magnetized mount? That’s a good spot for a phone or tablet for others In the truck during long drives.

I installed the Buildright industrie and a ram mount. Works excellently and holds everything you mount to it. I could change the phone mount to hold my iPad or anything else when I wanted to.

I popped out the dash tray and attached a generic $10 magnetic mount right through the rubber mat/plastic tray frame with machine screws and nuts. Mine is in a Gen 1, but the Gen 2 is essentially the same.

I put it horizontal and the phone rests on the lip of the tray and the magnet just has to hold it from sliding left or right.

Not sweating two small holes in the rubber mat, since you could't see them even if you removed the mount since it's recessed from view. The mat is replaceable as well.
