I wanted to have mine powder coated but can't seem to get the tips off the truck. Is there a trick to this or do I have to just muscle it off. I loosened the bolts but the tips just don't want to come off.

i tried to get mine off when i took my exhaust off. even with the exhaust off the truck i had to hammer the effers lose

I finally got them off. Air hammer made quick work of this job. Getting them back on was the hard part. Had to use a ratchet strap to squeeze the pipes together enough to line everything up. Glad I did it looks much better. Ill post pics when it stops raining. Thanks for the tips.

Finally got around to doing this. Some liquid wrench worked wonders for getting the tips off. Sprayed the joint down with that then worked the tip up and down (left and right is a lost cause due to the tips being welded together side by side) and pulled them right off. Cleaned them up with wire brush, sand paper, sea foam (don't really know if that's a good idea, but it works wonders with carbon buildup), and soap+water.

Painted them with High temp flat black (up to 2k degrees). Looks great, although not as nice as the first post, but I have my reservations about how long that would last (happy to be proven wrong).

Re-install required me to crawl underneath to line them up and to force the pipes APART to get them to line up. Hammered them on with a block of wood between the pipe and a mallet, still ended up boogering up the outside edge a bit so had to touch up on the truck. That paint is a bit like plasti-dip in that it leaves black dust everywhere around your work area, very easy to ruin clothes etc if you kneel on the ground or something nearby. (guess what idiot thought he was going to spray these without putting on his "paint clothes")

I'd never used this type of paint before but found one thing that was really nice. There was a couple blemishes I left on them from the re-installation, but after doing the "bake" procedure (10 min idle, 10 off, 20 min idle, 20 off, 30 min idle, off) these actually smoothed out and look great.

I just masked off the area around the exhaust and cleaned and sprayed them with matte black header paint, looks awesome and is holding up very well.

They still looked good after you ran them over a few times too.

SRS, you used high temp paint, right? I didn't know that they made a high temp clear coat.

I did mine several years ago without the clear coat, and with mud flaps installed they still look good. I think the clear coat is a good idea.

Clear coat is actually a bad idea. After some miles on and off road the clear coat gets sticky enough for the dirt to stick to it and you will never be able to wash it off. Have to sand it all off down to the paint....

Never did like the zinc looking finish of the exhaust tips, so today I powder coated them with some high temp black satin. They should clean up easy when the truck is washed too.
