I don't know how much "overlanding" I do, but we get around. In the past,I had a Rtrax tonneau cover with a KB Voodoo rack. The setup was great but when I 'm trying to take my wife, my kid, and my German Shepherd, it doesn't quite work for us. I swapped it out for a Snugtop and I'm much happier. I think I'm gonna change the tent too but that's another story. I'm debating on if I want to add a bed slide or not ...

Mind sharing why you dont like the tent? What are you going to replace it with?

Honestly, it's too big to be so high. I'm 6'0 but it's a little bit of a hassle to put up and take down when standing on the ground. It wasn't a problem when it was just on the bed rack, but putting it up higher has changed things quite a bit. I'm currently looking into some sort of hardshell like a James Baroud. It's quite a bit more and has its own drawbacks but I think it would be net positive for us.

Did this to keep the truck free for offroading and day trips. The trailer was a christmas present for my wife so she has an emotional stake in the rig. Besides Indian Guides, we did 3k miles this summer around the southwest with our three boys. (Grand Canyon, Moab and the big 5 Utah State Parks). Highlights were busting around (cliche'?) Moab and Arches, the White Rim Trail around Canyonlands and entering Zion from Bryce while looking up through the giant sunroof. Oh, the kids sleep in a tent, we sleep in the trailer with the dog. Next year is Yellowstone and Glacier National Park.

Just starting my build here. Need to get a tent and awning. Looking at OVS Nomadic 3, Annex and OVS Nomadic 270 Awning.

Was going to go low with the tent, but am going higher so I can fit under the tent and have the option to use the annex for more space out of the rain (since I'm on the west coast). And awning for rain too (or shade when I am lucky enough).

Went with Retrax Pro XR retractable. Need to be able to open it all the way once in a while, or would have gone with the Diamondback. Those just look great (and are more secure too). Adapters for Overhaul HD rack, the rack and the wider HD bars. Want room for tent and other stuff on the rack sometimes like kayak or Yakima skinny warrior basket. The wider bars also help the annex clear the rear bulging quarter panel.

The racks adjust 19 - 30"

Looking at adding a platform (low profile) on the cab. Not for anything particularly heavy, but could come in handy. Will see, not sure about that. Don't want the extra noise or when the RTT is off, the extra wind resistance.

The way it sits, now, should be able to have the RTT base a few inches below the roofline to reduce drag a bit and cheat it down for a lower centre of gravity, while still being able to walk under it. Will need to fine tune it based on sag with a normal camping load out of gear and water etc.

The shadow makes the tonneau look tilted or weird.

This is what I am currently running. Selling the trailer though. Having the extra storage inside the trailer and being able to uncouple from it and explore around are huge pluses. But trying to stay self contained and more compact, if possible. Quicker setup and teardown and able to turn around more easily on tight roads make the trailer a no go.

This is where I see myself in probably 2 years if I start doing longer camping trips where having an easily movable vehicle is a necessity.

I go back and forth on this so much. Ultimately, well get a travel trailer one day as I much prefer the ability to set up a camp and leave it. A big downside of all RTT setups is the inability to take your car out somewhere after you set up camp.
