How does the oil life calculation work? I know it has to do with miles driven and RPMs, but anything else?

The week before the snoball500, I was going to get my oil changed. But the life indicator said 27%. I figured that was a good number. Then half way through the run, the " Changing Oil" light comes on.

That 27% was oil life left. So maybe 1250 miles?
I am not sure how the truck calculates oil life after you set it to 100% remaining.

The dealer set mine at 5000 miles when it was new and that's what the book says, so, that's what I use.

Nothing wrong with setting it for 5000 and changing around then but the book actually says 7500 for the 6.2L. I wasn't aware you can change the set oil life values in the truck's computer.

I'll have to read it again, but I thought the 7500 was for synthetic oil. Yes, you can set the mileage on the computer. It's been a couple years since I looked at it but I think it reads in %, like 100%, 80%.... and that corresponds with miles.
